My new cue is...different

Thanks. The cue is:

English Boke Birch forearm
Four camatillo points with abalone tiffany diamond inlays outlined with ivory
Four veneers - I think they are black, blue, green, natural
A and B rings are white phenolic
The handle is Thuya Burl with Boke rings outlined with black and white phenolic
The butt is Camatillo with eight alternating sized abalone and ivory inlays
It has an Ivory hoppe ring with a black phenolic cap

Cue weighs 19.0 oz.
Two shafts both 13.0mm ivory ferrules with MM tips on both

for someone with limited custom cue experience
how did you come to pick that combination of woods
inlays and everything else????
SPECTACULAR:thumbup:
you may want to think of doing cue design consulting ....

... Dave worked hard on the cue and doesn't deserve anything bad said about it...

...The guy that said it was gaudy later changed his mind after we played for a while...

...I don't think I will sell this one. I'm just going to keep adding funds to the custom cue account until I can afford another. This was my first custom cue that I helped design and I pray I will never part from it.

You are correct about this cue deserving NOTHING negative being said! I wouldn't have cared WHO made this cue, it's STUNNING! Knowing that Dave is the one who made it, I can "picture" its playability having just picked one up myself! ;)

The guy that said it was "gaudy" is a ballet-dancing sissy-nanny!!! (Not really...or maybe he is, I don't know?!?!) Remember, everyone's entitled to their own opinion...no matter how wrong it is! :p

Never say never...but I'm willing to bet if you have your choice, you'll probably cherish this one for a very long time!!!

Beautiful cue........"English Boke Birch forearm".......Sure its not Masur Birch AKA (Karelian Birch) ? Either way....great cue. Larry

Well I am certain it is birch. He made a cue years ago and the owner described it as English Boke Birch. I loved it and asked if Dave had any more. He did and the receipt says Boke Birch.

Thanks. I did lots and lots of research. I pulled pictures of the cues that Dave designed from this website and sent him the pictures of the woods I liked. Then we collaborated for a while back and fourth.

Initially, he had just got some ancient Kauri wood from New Zealand that was preserved under ground for the last 50,000 years. He said that it didn't turn out as figured and was very plain. I was a bit disappointed because I thought it would be awesome to have a cue that was 50,000 years old.

Too bad it didn't look like these:

I have to say, I've been back into this thread numerous times today gawking at this "gaudy" cue! ;)

This is what's so cool about the gallery section...the eye candy and the willingness to share!!! Again, thanks for posting pictures of this one...it definitely has caught my attention!!! This is a really spectacular cue you have here!!!

Heres a couple pics of some Masur / Karelian I have .........and I have cut a LOT of it up. That grain pattern is very distinct and is caused boring beetle larvae...... Finland and Russia are the main source of this wood. Anyways thanks for posting the pics, its a beautiful cue.

That looks different than what's in the forearm of my cue, I think. That looks darker and a different color. Mine looks kind of like birdseye maple with the eyes smeared, same tones.

-EDIT- I love the different woods you have and I'd love to learn more. Thank you!

However, all of the pieces you have underneath the piece you're holding looks similar. Is the main piece in those pictures stained?

The piece I am holding has been stained........look at the stuff underneath. Anyways sorry to go off on a tangent with the wood clarification.......Larry

I wood say that you did not go on a tangent. We are discussing a wood that probably is in my cue and was just called something different. Now that I look it up, can't find anything referred to as "boke". So my guess is that you are spot on. I doubt it would have gone over well though if I asked for a cue with what he calls boke and tried to correct him. Good info and an amazing wood. thanks.

BSarlo here is some high end Masur Birch, and it has been professionally stabilized. This is from one of my other projects, so I forgot about these pics.....

I like your cue, what is the handle made of? Also, what is the inlays? Is it Abalone?

depending how you phrase the question
i dont think you would offend mister kikel by asking him if boke and masur are the same wood by different names
