My One Pocket Game Winner

Went to the poolhall tonight and played some one pocket - lately the guy I play with has been destroying me because he's a lot more experienced than I am. I struggle to play good safes, and play good two way shots and it really takes its toll over the course of a game.

Thankfully, I can sorta balance my lack of experience out with some pretty sharp shooting but I, by no means, want to rely on shooting instead of smart play. So, I want to really learn this game inside and out to keep getting better.

Anyway, I was playing tonight and the guy kick safed and left me in the stack, I only needed one more ball to win and I saw a fun shot. Here's what the situation looked like:

The 9 off the 12 is not dead straight, but that's what I decided to play to win. I was going for the shot and the guy was fascinated... asking me that shot could actually go or not, and he didn't think it was possible. I explained how I was gonna shoot the ball to affect it's path off the 12 and then I executed it with high left and the 12 went in... game over =)

I usually see shots like this but I'm actually very happy that I was able to execute it as I saw it in my head. After the ball dropped I felt like I had accomplished something :D Even if this shot is relatively minor in the entire list of shots that are possible in pool I was still glad to execute this one.

I'm not saying the shot is amazing, or that it's fantastic. I was just happy about it.

Looks like it would be a double hit on the CB if you didn't angle away. What was your shooting line?

Congrats on a ballzy shot!

Congrats !
itsa great feeling when "one of them" finds its way in the pocket.

You hit it soft so that it would stay on your side if ya missed , right ?!?

We should call you the magician if the 12 went in as you said, LOL.
Go shot though !

The nine went in, right? I don't see a path for the 12 except up to the head rail with lots of throw, then back down to your pocket. If it was the 12, I'm betting on you vs. Efren.

Haha, forgive the typo. I shot the 9 off the 12 and potted the 9. I just used "12" so many times that I put it down without thinking.

But yes, the 9 did drop.

Good shot, what i liked more is you managed to keep the stack of balls in the rack, which tells me you have been playing safe! unless you getting big handicap!

How does high left make the shot? I can't see for sure from the diagram where it's pointing, but it looks like it's headed above the pocket.

The diagram isn't perfect, but the 9 off the 12 lined up about `/4 diamond to 1/2 a diamond away from the corner pocket.

Hitting the CB with high puts a little draw on the OB and the left pushes the OB slightly right. Though, I highly doubt that the left didn't anything substantial but the follow on the CB is what "helped" the OB get into the pocket.

Again, the diagram isn't perfect.

This is one of the many shots in Ray Martin's 99 Critical Shots in Pool. The key -- and somewhat counter-intuitive -- variable is that the fuller you hit the second ball (the 12-ball in Richard's example) the more the first ball (9-ball) will deflect.

In Richard's example it looks like you should just skim the 9-ball into the 12-ball.
