this is what forums are all about. who'd ever guess i'd find out about a FREE cad program at a POOL FORUM :):):):):) the best part of threads is when they get into tangental topics.

it is however, NOT simple and easy to use(however this application of just mapping an image onto a cynlinder is pretty easy on the scale of things, just getting to that point requires some knowledge)

HOWEVER, you can also create custom .blend interfaces, and I could set it up so that if you give it a certain image with certain dimensions, it would auto map it correctly, but you would still need to download blender, load the image and hit F12(render) key, and then save the image.

As to the actual workflow, I created a cynlinder, loop cut it(like put an extra ring) into it at each spot I wanted a material change(the inlay, the points, the wrap).

Then I assigned a new material to each section of the material, threw on the image(I took about 20 seconds to crop out the inlay and add some space at the top to ready it in blender), and then played around with size, repeat and offsets until it lined up right, then setup a camera and lights and rendered.


If interested I can provide the .blend file along with some text describing where to add images, but imho you would need knowledge of the program and wouldnt be very useful for this forumn like WEI.


HOWEVER, if *anyone* has a design and they'd like to see it on a cue, just PM me with an image or basic design and I can slap it on a cue(now that I have made the design and cut it up in blender and have lights/materials/camera all setup, it should take less than a minute of playing around with image), I can provide you with a picture of what the cue would look like.

Wish every cuemaker have such a program... then cue designs will probably be more original ..... The problem has always been expressing our needs to them..

i thought every cuemaker hooked up to a computer DID have a cad,,,,,,,,,,and expensive one,,,,or am i making assumptions?

it's because he's using selected colors off his color wheel in the image program,,,and it doesn't sync with a real pic

I believe this to be an uneducated statement, I'm sure that many of the cuemakers you do like use CNC, it's not the CNC you don't care for it's the finish work and laziness that is often associated with it. I'm as big a fan of Sharp points and inlays as anyone I've ever met, but I also know enough to know that 80% of the top guys are now or will be soon using technology, in one way or another.

nice, C..you have to shade the edges of the white as it turns with the cue. you're getting too good. most notably, the ring and the joint.

nice background, btw. you taking the same class as icon?

These lighting effects are ridiculously simple, just a button on the software.

I actually did the rendering on a very rudimentary drawing program. I am sure Illustrator or Corel Draw would have more realistic looking fill patterns. It was fun to try to come up with a pic of a guys basic design.

Can you imagine the cue-makers, though? He builds the cue to your design, hands it to you, only to see the look of diappointment on your face...

I once ordered over $10,000 worth of customized travel bags from Hong Kong from a broker who was a guy I used for many years and was like an old friend. We waited 4 or 5 months. We picked the materials from a small swatch of vinyl. They were supposed to be a burgundy color, a 1980's thing now I guess. When the bags came in they were the most god awful color that could only be desribed as "regurgitated purple milk".

The huge delivery truck pulled up, fully loaded. I opened one box and said to him "I can't give these out. They're hideous".

To make a long story short, we all three ate a piece of it (me, the broker, the factory). He offered to give me all the bags free. I declined. He sold them and donated them and it took 5 years for him to get rid of them all. I am sure they would be fashionable in today's world.

when it comes to color, there should be a standard. like maybe pantone color matching. the south american leather company that does protective covers for things like pda's and computers, uses the pantone system.
