I have a Precise spindle on my cnc machine and I think the bearings are about to go out. I called the company about rebuilding it but they would not give me a ballpark price that leads me to believe that it is going to cost alot. :frown: Just wondering if anyone has had there sprindle rebuilt and what the cost was so I can figure out what I am going to do. All thougths are appreciated.
Thanks,

Chris, it will not be cheap for sure. It is common for OEM manufactures to not want to give a quote until they see the motor. You have several choices. If you realy like the spindle, ask if you can send it back and let them quote you a repair price. You could replace it with another if you can find one. Check e-bay. Or change spindle motors completely with something than can be repaired easily if that is possible. If it where me and it didn't cost anything I would have someone give me a quote on the motor by sending it to them.

good luck, Jim.

Is this the correct comapny?

I would guess that they didn't want to give you a price without seeing it or you didn't talk to the right person. More than likely it will not be cheap on a rebuild. However you get what you pay for.

That is the correct company. I really hate spend a bunch of money but you have to have it. I was turning some shafts and I always turn it off when I go to change shafts. I turned it back on and it was definitely louder and I noticed the bit seemed to have more drag on it when I turned it by hand. The joys of cuemaking right.

They are great when they work.... And expensive to fix. It is amazing how much more that one little word "precision" makes when it comes to $$.. Good luck.

Runout of 0.00008!! You would think that would be a fairly standard fix to not be able to give at least a ballpark figure.

Precise spindles are top notch. I found a smokin deal on ebay for a Super 65 with the variable speed box. BUT....I paid more for a new filter, brushes, collet and collet nut than I did for the whole ebay price. These are not cheap spindles to purchase new. Easily can run in the thousands for a new one. I suspect it will not be cheap to have it rebuilt and have new bearings installed but it really depends on what your budget will allow and what your intentions are for it's use. Are you using it more for just a router to cut with or are is it to used as a precision inlay head? If it's the latter......you may want to have it done right. Otherwise you can buy a whole lot of routers with the rebuild money.

I have a couple Precise model 1156's and the bearings are $125 so I'd guess rebuilds would be in the $500-$800 range.

New they would be $3,000 ish or more.

CK,

I would be willing to bet that what you need are new brushes which you can install yourself probably for under $30. Call Precise and ask. They had them for my models and a Super ??? which hadn't been made for over 25 years.

I've got the same set-up as you do. I had to get a new collet and nut so I got an extra set of brushes, 185.00 thank you. I normally run mine on about 20 to 25,000rpms but speed it up when cutting harder materials and it runs very smoothly and fairly quite. I only use it for inlays and use routers and laminate trimmers for all else. Good machine.

Don't do like I did and keep running it until it's no longer rebuildable.

just more hot air!

I checked the brushes they seemed ok. So I called back this morning and asked to talk to a technician and he seemed to think it would probably be around $1000 to get it rebuilt so I took it off and sent it in today. Tough lesson learned. Now I will do like Dick said and use a porter cable regular router for rough in and tapering and only use the precise for inlaying instead of everything. I guess it will be a little bit before I buy the mill I was looking at. Gotta pay to play I guess. I thank everyone for there comments and I will let you know the final tally if I don't fall over dead when they tell me, lol.
