My upcoming match with Johnny Archer

I have an opportunity to play a match with Archer next month when he comes to Puerto Rico.

The deal is that he is to play the local shooters for $30 or $40 a pop, best of 3 in 8-ball, BCA rules (more or less).

Now I have a dilemma about the whole thing. I am excited to play him and to just watch him play, but there are some things that make me hesitant....

First of all, if I play above my level and beat him, then that will mean that I am the one at the table and I will miss my chance to see him playing against me... On the other hand, he could easily run 2 racks and out and I would not get to ever shoot.

And a best of 3 is just too short to be very meaningful, IMO.

Please give me some feedback regarding what you think I should be trying to get out of this experience. I am thinking that I would rather pay more to just have a one-on-one lesson.

It just seems like I am going to pay the money for the novelty of saying that I played JA.
 
Actually, that's more in line with what I was thinking....

I wonder if we can repair your reputation now.... could be a good challenge...

Yes, it is just a novelty. But since you can't control the future, just enjoy it however it turns out. I would definitely try to win though.

well,you could beat him.not get to see and learn much.or he could destroy you,but put you to sleep with his slow play and still not see or learn much.
sooo,i would just kick his butt. that would be a good story.lol
 
I know him personally (grew up in same county) and you'll find out that he is one of the nicest guys you've ever been around. He will gladly give you
pointers if you want or need them. But, he won't instruct unless you ask. He is very casual and relaxed when in an off-duty status like you describe. He came to my brother's pool hall for a get-together when he was in town (at no charge) and played a few racks. I didn't get a shot needless to say except when I got to break.

Tell him John from home said hello.....and have fun.

This is Rudy Krigger from St. Thomas, how are you? You might remember me from the Gran Prix de Latin America in 2004, but I've been away from the pool scene for a while, so I haven't played in PR lately. I'm sure that I know you, but not by your username. From your writing style and your age, I'm guessing that you might by Rocky Grau, but I can't be sure. At any rate, please, when will Johnny be in PR, and at what room? I've got to be there!

Of course I remember you, but am doubting that you know me. I am a Gringo that is transplanted here and though I still have some flashy moves on the table, my glory days of billiards are over (read: a married man). Now, I am just the World's Greatest Banger. My strong suit is being able to screw-up my opponents by lucking into safties via incompetence supported by poor execution and indecisiveness. I am so bad that it often looks like I know what I am doing! Haha!

Johnny will be here at the end of January 27, 28 and 29, I believe... he will be here with another pro, but I am sworn to secrecy about the identity of that person.

Yeah, Yeah, I hear you talking that yin yang about how bad you play. It sounds like you're trying to match up!:D

well why cant you watch him play everybody else? Is it private games or something? Id show up early and watch him play everybody if its allowed......then when you play him if you get a chance and can beat him, you get to say you beat archer in a race to 3.
If i was you id start collecting pieces of lint and stuff now........when you are at the table throw them out and then when its his turn he will be so busy picking it, it may throw him out of his game.

LOL! The only problem is that I've watched Johnny play so much that I now find myself picking pieces of lint the same way.

Regarding the matching-up... I have been losing weight lately....
 
Seems like an easy fix to me. Play hard and win! Have a buddy with a video camera tape it or set it up in the corner on a tripod. Then you will get bragging rights, plus the proof, plus be able to watch both yourself and Johnny over and over again. :D

PS - then you must post the match on youtube so we can critique it!

Oh, that is my plan... I just got overly excited when I found out that I could play him... then I thought about it later and came to a different conclusion. Of course I will go for broke and see if I can win. I guess if you run the table, you could beat anyone in the world, huh? But what would I learn? I can run the table against any Tom, Dick, or Jose down at the corner bar and learn the same thing.

Working on the lint angle... it may be my only hope... Maybe I can use it against Rudy too!

First off

the only lesson you are going to learn is one you already know ..... If you miss, you will lose ... lol It is a competition, not instruction. Johnny will simply run out in the simpliest most logical way to do it without missing, so what's to learn? Pros very rarely get themselves in trouble enough to where they have to pull one from out of the hat .... lol

Buddy Hall did the same thing when he came here, about 2/3's speed, and beat almost everyone. He did make a couple of good shots though when he was a little slack on shape.

If i were you I wouldn't be too concerned about beating Johnny. Are you one of the top 10 pool players on the planet? When he kicks your ass look back on this post.
