My view on shot making

Taking a chance here, but these concepts have been in my head and I just wanted to share and see what others think.

Bored at work one day, I drew a diagram like this.

I realized a few things. How correct they are I don?t know or even valid, but I sure understand the geometry of making a shot.

There is only one point on the object ball to contact which result is a dead center pocket.

There is only one point for the cue ball to be on the table, at time of contact with the object ball, which will result in dead center pocket of the object ball. The red dot ball is a cue ball at time of contact with the object ball. The red dot is the contact patch of the cue ball. The contact patch is where the ball meets the table.

No matter where you are shooting from on the table, there is only one point on the table for the cue ball to be, at time of contact with the object ball, which will result in a dead center pocket of the object ball.

The center of the cue ball, at time of contact with the object ball, is always a ? ball from the contact point on the object ball. Since this is a sphere, the center is also the contact patch of the ball. So, the contact patch, the bottom of the cue ball, will always be a ? ball from the outer edge of the object ball. Also the distance between object ball and cue ball contact patches is always 1 ball.

Where you shoot from on the table determines the concept of amount of hit. Full hit at Ball A, half hit at Ball B but still only one point on the table for the cue ball to be, at time of contact with the object ball, which results in a dead center pocket of the object ball.

No matter what English/Speed is used; there is only one point on the table for the cue ball to be, at time of contact with the object ball, which results in a dead center pocket of the object ball..

What English/Speed is used determines the direction and amount that the cue ball contact patch, at time of contact with the object ball, will rotate left or right from the dead center pocket contact point of the object ball.

Anyway, this is how I see things. This has made more sense to me than anything. I can get a real visualization of where the cue ball needs to be.

Sounds like you found the "Ghost Ball Aiming Principle"

The center of the cueball is always a 1/2 ball away from the contact point on the objectball....SPF=randyg
 
If a person is learning to aim or having problems, I think the easiest thing to teach or learn would be the type of pot (full, 3/4, 1/2, 1/4 ball hits). For example 12 oclock is full, 11 is 3/4, 10 is 1/2, and 10:30 is 1/4. Once you learn the type of pot, you need to learn the type of hit (CB point). This would be Full ball, 3/4, 1/2, or 1/4. If you question the CB point. While aiming at the OB pot (lets use 1/4 ball pot) picture a line quickly to the intended pocket from the CB. Say this like is 10 oclock, you use 1/2 ball CB hit to your 1/4 OB. This judges the placing for the ghost ball, the path/CB position at contact.
 
Right or wrong I was taught many moons ago (60 years) to draw an imaginary line from the center of the pocket through the center of the OB and hit where the line comes through the object ball. W/O english, if you hit that spot it has to go in the pocket. Use as little english as you can for position. Stop shots and draw are your friend. Works for me still. I think a lot of people make this game harder than it is. After awhile it's mostly mental...keeping the little negative voices out of your head. Johnnyt

Jude raises a good point, it's like going from realizing the world is round to realizing not only is the world round but there are other planets and they all revolve around the sun.

Once you've realized that throw has an effect on where the object goes you can start to understand how to control it and use it to your advantage as well as allow for it when using spin.

Well, more to my point, pool isn't geometry. It's physics. Now, THERE IS a geometric element to pool but we're not dealing with lasers and mirrors here. It's a ball contacting another ball and at that moment of contact, something happens. Understanding what happens is going to help a player understand one of the reasons why they might have missed a shot. To understand it, you have to understand the PHYSICS of pool and get away from the straight lines. When you do, shots like the one below can be made without making any contact with the 9ball.

Actually, I'd say pool is physics combined with geometry.

Geometry is used as a foundation for shot making, after that physics takes over.

I think everyone can agree that it's the physics of billiards that makes this game beaufiful/frustrating(!)

I think some readers misinterpreted your post - they think you're not taking throw into account. The above quote says to me that you are aware of throw.

Guess I should of put ?system? in the topic line or everybody already knows this stuff.

I needed a way to adjust for the physics that come into play when pocketing a ball.

I started with a straight in shot using either stop or stun stroke, the pure shot as I call it.
In this shot, the center of pocket, the contact point of the object ball, the cue ball center/contact patch are all on the same line and yes, it?s a straight one.

Stroke the cue ball straight with no side spin and the object ball goes straight into the center of the pocket. Fairly straight forward so far. If done right, the stun or stop does not affect the direction of travel, after contact, of either the object ball or cue ball. This can be shown by doing a drill of putting the object ball and cue ball some distance apart but such that the placement is a straight in shot. The drill is to hit the object ball into the center of the pocket and the cue ball stops dead with out going left or right or forward or back. This is a very important drill. If everything isn?t straight, you will know it. The next step in this drill is to use follow to see if you can follow the object straight into the pocket. If you ever wonder if you are shooting straight, do this drill.

For a straight in shot, the contact point on the object ball for a dead center pocket is also the start point for the direction of travel for the object ball for a dead center pocket. This is true for angle shots, as long as there is no english and no induced throw. Once you put english on the cue ball or induced throw, the contact point of the object ball for a dead center pocket and start point for the direction of travel for the object ball for a dead pocket change. Really, the start point for the direction of travel for a dead center pocket stays at the same point on the object ball, but now the contact point needs to change to adjust for the english/induced throw.

The secret is to know how much to adjust for the change. There is no system that?s gonna do that. But, I now have a good way to visualize the needed adjustment by having a valid starting point to adjust from.

Moving a cue ball around the table, pocketing balls, is really just connecting the dots.
