the wrap on my cue has always been smooth. until now. something is just started to occur on my cue's wrap. teeny tiny fibers, like super fine beard stubble is popping up in parts of the wrap. how do i smooth them down?

here's how i noramlly care for my wrap. i towel down OFTEN during play by gripping a terry cloth rag tight around the wrap and turning so the cloth wipes with the spin in the wrap. i always do this because i feel i'm not only cleaning the wrap of sweat, but burnishing the linen as well. i store the cue in a whitten.

i'm wondering now,,,do you think doing this too often and too tightly has caused the wrap to burr?

Spray starch and then a couple of oak board pieces used to press the wrap down should do the trick.

my wrap,,,rats

More than likely you have wiped the wrap down, with a damp towel or gotten it wet somehow. That will raise the fibers. You can use some spray starch, on a clean cotton cloth & apply it the same way you discribed your cleaning method. Then smooth the wrap down using the neck of a bottle. Just rub up & down. A little goes a long way & too much will make the string too wet to do any good. If you spray directly on the wrap you will end up having to clean the dried over spray, off of the painted parts of your cue. In the future never get the wrap wet & LIGHTLY wipe it down...JER

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but the wrap on one of my cues feels like it has a knot in it. It bugs me when I feel that knot and I'm thinking about taking a razor blade and trimming it off. So, being totally uninformed as to how cues are made, I'll ask this: If I trim the knot off will the wrap unravel or is it glued on to the cue?

DON'T CUT IT. As bad as it sounds, take a HAMMER & tap it flat, rub some waxed paper on it & rub it with the neck of a bottle...JER

Thanks for the reply.

thanks all. i'll do the starch thing,,,,,,,,lightly.

yes,,,i, on occasion, used a damp paper towel to clean with and quickly swtched to my cloth rag to burnish. the wrap on this cue is particularly dry,,,it always has been. ie,,,there is a smoothness to my other wraps, so that when i wipe them down, the cloth glides/slides over what seems like a slicker surface. but THIS cue's wrap was always very very dry. looks it too,,,,the surface is dull compared to my other cues, which have a sheen to them.

on a side,,,,is there any way to add a similiar sheen to this cue's wrap?

You can take it to any cue repair person with a lathe and they can clean, press and make the wrap as smooth and shiney as you want for about fifteen or twenty dollars and about ten minutes time. Only time a wrap needs changed is when you are tired of the color and want a change or you have a Chinese cue and the wrap has started to unravel.
Dick ---- have probably rewrapped 20 Chinese cues for every one American cue. LOL

Here in Cincinnati there is a fellow, who owns a room by the way, has a Szamboti and everytime he plays with it, when finished he very lovingly takes a damp rag and cleans the sweat and powder and such off of his wrap. Right now if you roll the cue on the table it is warped so bad that it looks like a Carp flopping around on a beach.

Wonder if the wrap groove was sealed good, and if the wrap was original. Man, that's a heck of a cue to have that happpen to, I really feel for the guy, but then again atleast he has one, wish I even had the warped one :D .. I guess If it's in the handle, there may be a chance of replacing it, but then, just would not seem completely original to me, If I had it.
I have heard a few stories of people having one, and even loosing them, or letting someone talk them into selling right before he passed. I heard he was hesitent to build one for someone after they sold theirs or lost it in play. I know of one guy that was able to talk him into again, but he passed away as his order came up, so it was never built, and now he wishes he would have held on to the one he had, said it was a rare design also. He did hold onto one other classic maker, and still has it, so he's doing better then I am. Greg

Mike Webb does an awesome wrap.
He tightened and pressed an old Schon of mine a while back and it looked and felt brand new.
There is nobody else I would go to in this area.

I just don't understand ...

why a wrap would get all sweaty or powder all over it.
Aren't you guys paying attention to what you are doing.

My hands NEVER get damp or sweaty, they are always dry
and warm. I HATE shaking hands with a player after the match,
and they have cold clamy hands that feel like a dead fish.
(Wipe them off with a towel or your pants before shaking hands,
I mean, that is just good manners).
