Name That Craigslist Scam

Fine...then what do you do if they say it's great that you'll be visiting Southern California & that they'll be waiting in the police station with cash in hand? After all, they might be afraid you're planning on mugging them.

Well, I've not had one ever respond back. I must be missing out on tens of people wanting to pay me $800 for something I'm only asking $400 for.

My daughter was advertising for a roommate. A girl from England responded and sent her a bigger deposit check than called for. Then my daughter was supposed to send the overage to a shipper somewhere for her stuff. My daughter deposited it in her account and the police showed up at her door the next day and took her away in handcuffs for check fraud. After being in jail half the night she had to get a lawyer to make it all go away. Besides this her account was frozen and all her outstanding checks bounced causing all kinds of fees and ruining her credit.

Very common Craigslist scam, overpayment with a fraudulent check, cashiers check or money order. The most common targets are vehicles or high end property nearing but not exceeding $5k (for deposit reasons you find out later at the bank). I have an extensive background in fraud investigations, especially financial instruments, and have seen this (usually) Nigerian scam so many times with unfortunate results. Kudos on sniffing it out.
