Hi James,

It was discussed late last summer / early whether we should use a qualifier system versus a simple buy-in system for the NCS national level tournaments. Yes, it is more traditional and easier from an organizational perspective to set up an entry fee and just have players buy-in. Our office would definately have less paperwork and we would get more sleep :) However, the purpose and the goals of the NCS have always been more than just to set up a series of tournaments.

It's about a national championship - about encouraging participation - about creating opportunity for as many players and people as possible.

The goals and purpose of the NCS and it's qualifier system is:

- To encourage more players all over the country to play in various cue disciplines (8, 9, 10, 1P and 14.1).

- To encourage more 9' table play nationwide. The past couple of years the more traditional pool rooms have started to slowly shift away from 9' tables to 7' tables because that is where they've made more money and most league play is on 7' tables. Bar tables are great, but we need to try to prevent the decline in 9' table play as well on the local and regional levels.

- To encourage players to spend more time and support their local pool rooms.

I respect and understand you perspective - however this is why the NCS is different: If the NCS was set up strictly with buy-in's the same opportunity would not necessarily exist for as many players. The qualifier system allows players who have families and who have lifestyles and incomes that prevent them from being able to pay a straight $500+ entry to participate. By paying a smaller entry and winning a qualifier spot some players can participate who have always wanted to.

Being a full time pool player is arduous, stressful and unpredictable as many on this forum know. The NCS is designed to let players have both opportunity without having to sacrifice so much of other areas of their lives.

I hope everyone who reads this thread and agree with our perspective will support the NCS and it's goals for the sport. In a short 4 or so months, the NCS has gone from being an unknown to being 2.5 weeks away from it's first national event - The NCS 8-Ball Championship at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas (Feb. 13-15) with The Action Report (TAR) live streaming and for the first time historically, one player winning a spot to represent the U.S at the WPA World 8-Ball Championship. Everyone who has supported this project, from the room owners, the players, the sponsors, the independent tournament directors around the country - thank you as it could and cannot be done without you.

Quite a long answer for a little questions eh?

Thanks,
Holly
