Review of the short film documentary -- “‘The cue maker”
We are all passionate about the great game of pocket Billiards/Billiards
we strive for Longer runs in 14.1, Run outs in 9ball, Great safety play and banks in one pkt. perfect position.
The cue Maker gets close to perfection and at times may actually reach it.
Dana Paul is the Cue maker in question mild mannered type but with a fierce desire for perfection And Gary Chinn is the student film maker and pool player.
The film is nicely shot, good editing and sound and the film has a nice pace to it.
Gary takes you through the pool scene in Ithaca and his process of obtaining his weapon of choice.
but what I also came away with is the friendships that are made thru this great game. and a better understanding and real respect for the Art of cue making and the pride Custom cue makers take in their Craft…

What are you going to use the film for...who is the intended audience? Is it meant to be informative or persuasive?
I looked at the trailer a couple of times and saw both things I liked as well as how it might be improved. (probably some of the same things in the 19 minute version).
I promise to give you honest and constructive feedback.
If you're only looking for praise, I am probably not your guy.

For those who haven't seen this documentary, you'll be disappointed if you try to compare it to The Hustler, or The Color of Money.
This documentary shows a more realistic, and balanced side to our sport. I made many friends playing league pool, buying a cue at Valley Forge, and I identify with Gary's story. I think it would go over well with the non-pool playing crowd. Its well edited and wouldn't look out of place on PBS.
I appreciate anything that promotes pocket billiards. Gary, please keep up the good work. On the Paradise Friday Night 10-Ball handicap scale, I can't rate this any less than A++! Anything less would be robbery.

i'm very interested, i have been around cue builders since 87. I can't change a tip personally, however I do know a good bit about cue construction(and theory/science of cues) as I have been to many cue makers shops and learned lots, it's a science and art. Jerry franklin and I used to talk about different wood densities and playing properties, long before the internet we used books on wood that we read and shared ideas/experiences of woods together. they were hard to find back then.
I speak to cue makers almost every week about cues, and share what i learn as I go with them, and somedays like today its social, Spoke to Barry for 20 minutes.
I value what any cue maker shares with me, and keep what they ask to keep private. I never betray a cue makers proprietary info that they choose to share with me. thats bad ethics and I'd be on everyones shit list if I did betray them. rightfully so. I consider it a honer when cue makers open up and tell me things. And the other side of the coin is there some widely shared ideas among cue makers that i speak openly about as its known accepted factual stuff.
I just dont have the skill to put to use my knowledge. I play pool, love cues.
