I had a very cheap Ryobi or something as all I do with a table saw is rip or cross cut boards into turning squares. No precision was needed but it was built so badly that it was dangerous to use. It caused me to cut my finger off. I then went out and bought a Power-Matic. Very nice saw.

I have a jet that is a great saw. It is the contractor style one. It is very quiet and smooth running. If you could stretch your budget a little the cabinet saws are very nice and will generally last a lifetime unless you use them 24/7

Check out Grizzley when they have a sale on the Contractor's saw. I bought 2 and am very happy. They are on sale all of the time. Call them and have they send you the monthly flyers.

I think for $1000 I would just build my own saw setup. An arbor, motor, belt and a few bearings. I wouldn't want a direct coupled motor as I believe it adds vibration hence the belt. As long as I didn't need another tablesaw I would build to what I need rather than to adapt one. And as long as I was doing that I would make the darn thing cnc as I know how to program that.

good luck, Jim.

All of the shaft machines that I have built always had the motor and blade incorporated into the design. Why waste the whole saw when the only features that you need is something for the blade to turn on and a parallel slot.

When I heard cabinet saw, I was hopeing that that was overkill. I'd love to have one but just to set it under a tapering machine to turn the blade seemed a great waste of such a fine piece of equipment. Can one of you guys post pictures of the arbor, motor, belt set up?

My machine is built into a dust collector cabinet. I can run it for long periods and the shavings and dust just accumulate in the V-shaped bottom where a 4 inch pipe is connected to my dust collector. When filled up I turn on the dust collector and suck it all out. In that way I don't have to continuously listen to the dust collector working. The draw back to this is that the motor and blade cannot be photographed as it is under the table. What I did was to bolt the motor to the bottom of my machines table. I then made a blade adapter out of a 4 inch diameter metal cylinder that is bored out to a close fit onto the shaft of the motor and held in position on the motors shaft with a set-screw. I use 12 inch saw blades so I turned a 1 inch offset for the blade to run on and then I threaded the rest of the shaft on this adapter. Now I can lock the blade onto this adapter and then just slide the adapter and blade onto the motors shaft and position it exactly where it cuts best. It is very easy to move slight amounts to get where the blade cuts best.
