Need Advice on Who Should Rebuild My GC IV Rails

So my GC IV is in pretty good shape except for the rails. I want the rubber replaced and the pockets tightened to 4&3/8". Problem is I also have a few Formica dings and dents that I want fixed as well. I figure I should get them both done at the same time. I am aware of a couple of different folks on here that do rail work. I was leaning towards having Ernesto Dominguez do the rails as I like how the tables he works on play. I live in Houston so I would have to ship them out to him. I'm pretty sure he can't do a Formica repair though. I'm not trying to "Diamondize" the table. Let me hears your suggestions on who should do the work. Thanks in advance!

You absolutely can not go wrong having Mark do your rail work. He probably knows more about Brunswicks than Brunswick does.

A lot depends on your budget. I had my gc 1 done by Mark, plays fantastic. I used Artemis cushions

Ok I've spoken with Mark, disassembled the rails and packed them up. Going to ship them off today. Specs I've requested are:
860 Simonis - Camel color
4&1/4" corners with 4&9/16" sides
Artemis cushions
I play mostly one pocket so I feel pretty good at this point on the above pocket sizes. Camel color will just look better for my billiard room.

If you all like, I can post some pics when the table is reassembled with the new rails.

I also play 1P and thinking along the same lines. Camel 860 and 4 1/8 or 4 1/4 corners. I'm just not sure I want Artemis. I was thinking Super Speed or Diamond. I thought Mark was a big Super Speed guy. Also does do the rails need to be modified on the gc4 other than extensions?

Artemis play really well. Hard times Billiards in Sacramento and Bellflower, CA both have the Artemis in their pool rooms. Personal preference I guess. I suggest you play on all 3 kinds to see which you most prefer. Another thought is to replicate the playing conditions of the pool hall where you play most frequently. Good luck with your decision.

I was also under the impression from Mark himself that the Super Speeds were the cushion to use as they are a "pool" cushion and I think Artemis is a 3C cushion. I had mine modified for current Artemis cushions just over a year ago, I cant complain about the way it plays but the Artemis cushion seems smaller than the Super Speed and seems to kick and bank a little short. When I am due for new cloth in the next year or 2 I may send them to Mark and go back to Super Speeds. In either case I had to have the sub-rails modified cause its a GCII and it had the Monarch Super Speed cushions.

I like the super speed cushions....the way I do rails with the super speed cushions.....I believe play great.
But...I won't convince anyone on which way they want to go.....if they want Artemis....then I'll put Artemis on...... I tell people that ask me to do their rails... I like super speed the best....but it's their call on which cushions they want on their table.
I do the job the customer asks for.....not what I thinks the better way to go.

I think the problem is....the guys trying to do rail work today for customers.....don't know how to calibrate the rails properly.....so people are not getting the full effect of how well the super speed cushions play.......I just finished Steve Lomax's anniversary this week with super speed cushions....and the rails play perfectly.
He's going to post pics as soon as the blinds come in and we put them on the table.....right now the tables together and he's playing on it...but the blinds are not on the table yet.....a few more weeks and the blinds will be on the table and he's going to post.
Yes...I like the super speed cushions over any of them.....that's not saying I'm right.....just that I believe they play very well when installed properly.

I have no doubt that correct modifications to the subrail can make superspeeds play great, but what about their quality and longevity?

In your experience have these factors improved?

Poolpariah, interested in how this goes. Not using my table much since installing it, partly because it's upstairs and I don't go up there much (kid's domain), and partly because I don't feel it was installed optimally and I can play on better equipment where I practice.

I think once I get my Brunswick light installed and get the rails done, cloth restretched and everything leveled and calibrated I would play more on it. After all it's my table it should play better than this, just no one qualified I know of to come tweak the table, much less do all the rail work etc. Spoke with Mark briefly when buying the table a year or so ago, intend on him doing the work when I'm ready so looking for a good review of the process.

Thanks!

I feel bad for you having a table that you do not use. I would be devastated without my table, I play on it 5 or 6 nites a week.

Thx, I'm a little devastated too... :)

First, the process to get the table was interesting to say the least, and I probably should have passed on it but wheels were in motion for some time. It is a nice GC IV, but I wavered between getting that and a Diamond, still not sure which would have been best. By the time I was done I paid a bit more than I wanted, but all in all it is in decent shape, a few dings on the tops of the rails, sides/blinds are almost perfect, some scratches in the nickel of the pockets, etc. And I picked up the Brunswick light to go with it, once that's installed will look pretty cool I guess.

I never imagined the table would just be sitting there. I knew it was going upstairs, so playing late at night etc. was out of the question since the kid's bedrooms surround it. The big change was I became a house pro (quotes around the pro part) at a facility with brand new GC V's in perfect condition, and I started playing for an hour or two each day at lunch, and before or after lessons, sometimes playing all afternoon or even all day. So I got my pool time in elsewhere, once I got home there wasn't that same drive to play some more. I think if the table were downstairs and away from the chaos and I could walk by it and just hit balls for a little I would. Maybe someday.

I think once I get it set up right - kids moving their junk out of the room, light installed, getting the rails done and table setup properly - I will use it more. Until then just trying to keep it from being a typical laundry collector... :)

Scottjen26,

I will definitely provide a review complete with pictures when I get the rails back, get it all set up and hit some balls on it. I spoke with Mark and the rails should be shipping out this coming week. Needless to say, I'm very excited about getting my GCIV back in operation.
Specs I chose were 4" pockets, 860 camel Simonis and Artemis cushions.

Stay tuned. :)

John

Wow, 4" is really going to be a tight pocket. Mine are 4 1/4". When its time for new cloth I will be going up to 4 1/2" but I am just a hack with a club. I also want to keep them the same size as the Diamond bar boxes that I play on for league and some tournaments.

So before I get started, I need to let you all know that I am not receiving any type of compensation for this review.

I received my rails back from Mark Gregory this past Monday. They were well packaged and arrived in great condition. I unwrapped them all and set them aside as I debated on who to get to recover my table. I decided I would recover the table myself. This was the first time I have ever attempted to cover a table on my own although I have seen it done many times and helped out on a few.:roll eyes: Mark talked me through it and I was able to get the job done to my satisfaction.

I finally got the rails on and the table set up last night and I must say that this table plays better than any I have ever shot on in my life. Twister banks need to be hit very well to get them to turn over due to the new cloth. The balls slide just a bit but the rails play so true and the pockets are world class. Once the cloth breaks in, I am sure the balls will slide a bit less.

The 4" pockets accept balls very well when hit properly. Mark is so detail oriented and it shows in the final result - both visually and when you play on the table. If you are on the fence about getting your rails done by Mark, don't wait any longer - just do it. http://www.perfectpocketz.com

See the photos below for the final result.

Thanks Mark for the great job!

Table looks great!!! Nice job on the bed cloth. Its good to see someone else using their ball return and not switching to drop pockets. The GC ball return does not seem loud at all to me, most noise comes from balls dropping into ball box. That would not be very hard to quiet down.
