Need help getting an exotic leather down to wrap thickness

Simple enough problem:

I have a real elephant wrap on my cue, I bought it on here maybe 6-8 months ago. I like it. The problem is, it's dyed black, but the PINK is starting to show through.

(Yes, this is the wrap in my avitar).

I have a gorgeous piece of Black elephant for a case, and want to cut a piece out of it to replace my wrap with, but it is WAY too thick.

Who can I send a piece to to be skived (or whatever the word is) down to 25 thou or so????

I have heard some places do this with a laser, others I have heard do it by hand with sandpaper.

I don't want to risk some fine elephant mucking around with it myself, I want someone that knows what they are doing.

ok Ill go out on a limb here. If its pink on the back side its probly not real elephant. Unless it came off a pink elephant that is. Seen a few of those in my life.

Real elephant hide should not be thinned to less than .045"-.050" or you could cut through the grain or texture and end up with a hole in the leather.

Thinning leatehr by hand sanding is not a very accurate method.

Why dont you send it to the person you bought it from. If they sell it they should be able to thin it also.
 
I think I recall that Chris Hightower has a skiver. Send him a PM and see what he can do for you.

LOL good point, sort of... I have been making pink elephant jokes since I noticed it.

Actually from our local leather supplier, I understand that most if not all skins are bleached nearly white in the tanning process and then dyed back to the desired color. This includes elephant. The "grey" elephant in this case for example, is NOT just "natural color", it's been dyed that way.

The black wrap I bought on here, can't remember from who.

The black larger piece, I bought direct from an exotic leather supplier, and he doesn't do the skivving.

Can't thank you enough for that. Larry was really nice on the phone and is gonna help me out!!

I received the "skivved" leather back from Larry.

Dont kill me for asking

OK, just a beginer question here but couldnt you take the handle down to compensate for the thickness of the wrap??

Yeah, but if you wanted to go back to linen or have it wrapped with leather again, it will be too deep of a groove. Building the groove back up isn't fun.
