Need help identifying old Joss cue

Hi folks, I'm new here. Just bought an old Joss Cue at a pawn shop. Made contact with Dan Janes & seems like he's not going to be of any help. It is not shown in his archive photos. It is unadorned, no inlays or design patterns. It appears to be all Birdseye maple, I think, with linen wrap at grip area. It has a crème colored hard plastic butt about 1-1/2" long. It has the stainless steel joint with ~~JOSS~~ logo in gold on both sides of joint & they do line up. It has a 7/8" ferrule. I'm not smart enough to know whether it is ivory or some of the other materials that were used. There is no serial number that I can find. It's a good shooting cue, still perfectly straight. My inclination is to keep it for personal use, but may consider selling. Mainly just interested in knowing it's heritage & if it's worth anything. Thanks in advance for any help provided. Looking forward to hanging out here a while. Thinking about joining APA now that I'm retired & have time for something other than work.

That would be a good shooting cue to keep for sure. Did you send pictures to Dan or were you just looking on the website? I have had several old Joss cues dating all the way back to the early 70s and have found Dan to be quite helpful when it comes to information. Your cue looks to be a model J-1 and was made in the 80s.

Heres one that belongs to a friend of mine that was broke and I had refinished. It had the same joint as yours with the JOSS in gold.

Thanks. For some reason Dan did not seem to want to help. I sent a description using his webform & I offered to send pics. His reply was to check his archives (which I had already done), but don't send pics. He said he had built cues for 50 yrs.+ & could not identify any single one. He said because it didn't have a serial number, it was built before 1998, but the gold letter logo was used on lots of cues.

He may have been building them that long but what he should have said was "if your cue has the gold letter Joss on the joint and its an entire BEM cue its a J-1 and was built sometime in the 1980s". I can see him not knowing exactly when and since its a plain cue thats about all the info he could give. Maybe ill email him and have him forward his cue ID questions to me..... :grin:

Yea, the way he replied to my questions made it pretty clear he didn't have time to fool with it. Kinda reminded me of an old rock star that has some new cd's for sale in the lobby. They sometimes forget what made them famous.
