hello everyone, this is my first poist here. i am thinking about buying a cue. right now i play with a low end action cue. i amthinking about putting 300 into a new stick. a lot of people i know are telling me to go with a joss. i have also heard good and bad things about meucci. i was wondering if you could helpe me out and tell me what you think. i have a few questions.

1. is the meucci black dot shaft comparable with the predator shaft? or is it just a way to keep up with the competition?

2. what do you think is the best wood to use in a stick?

3. can a standard joss shaft stand up to a layered shaft in terms pf playability?

4. what other cues should i take a look at for around 300?

thank you for any replies.

Ronin

Take a look at Viking cues. They're well made, and you can customize them with various stains, ring colors, wraps, and joints. They have lots of models that fall within your price range. My first good cue was a Viking, and I really liked it.

Have a look at Helmstetter. I have one that I picked up for about the price you are looking for and it is a great cue. I know Helmstetter has a pretty solid reputation, so maybe check those out.

I reccomend you seek out afew of the local custom cue makers in your area (there should be lots if you are in Florida) and try out what they have to offer. For 300 bucks you should be able to get an entry level custom cue. Ask around and find out who is building good cues in your area and then find the person who makes the cue you find hits best.

everyone will have their particular taste in woods, but maple is the standard for a reason.

layered shafts don't play better, imo. btw,,,the predator shaft has very little defection because of the construction of its last 4-5 inches, not because it is layered.

mecdermott cues hit very nicely. think about fury also,,,,a good buy for the money. a friend swears by his $90 fury which is their bottom of the line. their top of the line is $300-$400

thank you for any replies.

300 cue investment

Go to DZ cues website or another cuemaker that starts in that range that is geographically near you and get a custom made cue as opposed to a production cue. IMO you'll be happier in the long run with your investment. By the way I feel that approximately 300 can be spent on wood quality and hit (feel), the rest is just jewelery/personal taste.

Although I now play with a custom Phillippi cue that kicks *ss I'd highly recommend either a Predator or Viking stick.

Thank you all for your replies.
I wanted to ask what do you all think about huebler custom cues?

Never played with a Huebler but I did want to concur on the Helmstetter post. I have owned two of them and they played fantastic.

I hear Huebler cues are very nice. I'd like to have one of their "custom" models.

Have you heard the Meucci joke? I came out of the pool room the other day and found my car window broken. Someone threw a Meucci in my car.

The Meucci philosophy is totally different from Predators'. Meucci beleives the the shaft should absorb the shock of the hit. Predator feels the shaft should be firm and rigid.

2. what do you think is the best wood to use in a stick?

Birdseye Maple primarily for the butt. Hard rock maple for the shaft.

I think so.

Pechauer, Jacoby, Mc Dermott, and local independent cue makers. You could get a very good plain looking cue from a good local cue maker for around $300 I would think. You might even get them to customize it a little, e.g., wrap, shafts size, etc.

i never liked hueblers. they feel odd. and if they still use the plastic insert,,,that can be a negative, because the plastic threads can be stripped over time. considering what is being produced(by manufacturers and custom cuemakers) and the quality for money spent, i think hueblers are relics and their best days are behind them.

For 300 I would go to a custom sneaky pete.. then if you wanted to try a new technology shaft you could easily get one made for the cue.

Joe (----has a Ted Harris and a Cory Barnhardt SP

you can get a dominiak for $300. if you were to add another $100, you could get a really pretty dominiak (i use the dw1008 - natural and ebony).

zim sells them, as does greg at billiardswarehouse.com

Yes I sell Dominiaks and I can honestly say, I prefer to play with one also. You can see a few of the models at www.zimsrack.com I play with the 1009 model with a Dominator shaft, retails for $550. I highly recommend a Dominiak Custom Cue (even if you buy it from someone else, haha!), they have a perfect balance, great craftsmanship, and play fantastic, IMHO!!
Good luck,
Zim

i love my dominiak. the dominator shaft is very stiff and has a great feel to it.

i sort of want a whippier one sometimes, actually, just for those extreme english shots... and dominiak design is amazing, in my opinion. simple, clean, good woods...

everyone i know who has shot with it loves it. one guy is thinking of getting one to replace his scruggs, even though they are night and day.

Dominiak Custom Cues offers something that, to my knowledge, is not offered anywhere else. With each Dominiak cue purchased, you receive a Warrentee that entitles you to this:
-for $125 you receive a new matching shaft, a complete refinish on your cue, you get to keep the current shaft you have and are able to do this once in a 12 month period for the lifetime of your cue for the original owner.
IMO, this can't be beat! Dominiaks cues are clean, has a great finish and are very reasonbly priced. I started selling Dominiaks in August of this year and have sold 9 already. Every time I order some, players see the photos of them and put a downpayment before they even arrive.
