Need Help!!.....Weight bolt

I have a 80's Huebler, the weight bolt looks to be epoxyd in, how can I get it out, the cue weight is 21.3oz. I use a 18.5 to 19 oz. cue, After playing for a hour my arms start to feel it.......OTB

Paul Heubler glued in all th weight bolts on his cues, he not want people messing the cues balance point. I have removed a number of them over the years and there two ways to do it. You can a soldering iron and place it's tip in the center of the bolt and heat it until the glue allows the bolt to be removed or you can drill into the bolt which will also heat it and use an Easy Out to remove it, which is the easy way in my opinion.

If you choose to heat be careful not over heat it, if you are going to heat it place you hand in the cues butt cap, if you can feel heat by holding it this way stop and try to remove the bolt. This process will take time so be patient, but it will work.

I would first try to tap that center hole if it is not already. When you get the weight bolt loose, you'll need some way to grab hold of it to pull it out. So I'm thinking thread it and use a long screw as a handle.

Then, you've got to soften the epoxy/glue whatever it is. Seems like you could use a soldering iron with a long thin tip stuck down in that hole. You wouldn't want to use a very high wattage iron - maybe 15W-25W. And hopefully the heating element of the iron isn't too big around so you don't burn scorch the inside of that butt. Put the iron into the hole, making sure it isn't contacting any wood, plug it in and let it gently heat up that weight bolt.

Then after 15 minutes or so, screw in your "handle" and pull (gently at first) to see if you can get any movement.

Depending on the size of that weight bolt, you've got quite a bit of mass to heat up, so it may not budge at first.

Taking your drilling the weight, heating and removing a step farther. You drill a hole a ways into the weight bolt utilizing your lathe and drill in tail stock. You then take a bit the next size larger and this time only drill to half the depth of the original hole. Now you take this bit and reverse it in your chuck so that the drill end is in the chuck and the shank can be inserted into the weight. Now, with your tail stock NOT locked down but your hand behind it pushing it forward and your lathe running in reverse try to push the bit further into the hole. In a short while you will see the drill bit get red hot from friction. this will cause the glue to melt. As soon as this occurs release the pressure on the back of the tail stock thus reducing the friction so that both the bit and the weight bolt cools and they will weld themselves to each other and since the lathe is running in reverse the bolt will screw itself out.

I've used this method a number of times for removing joint screws.

Thanks Dick, that makes perfect sense. Now I know what to do if my current methods don't work, but so far I have not encountered one that was stuck to that point.
