Hey guys,

I'm seriously considering custom making an Andy Gilbert while his prices are still decently low....can someone tell me a website I can go to look for a wide range of wood pictures? Also, is there a simple downloadable program (please no CAD) that I can create a cue sample for reference?

I'm holding off the actual ordering of the cue until I actually get to test-hit a Gilbert...unfortunate I'm in Champaign-Urbana, IL, and no one I know here has one, is there anybody close enough to me who might be willing to let me test hit his/her Gilbert? If not, I'm gonna have to wait until the DCC.

The other thing is that I'm unsure of what kind of a joint thread type to get, can someone advise me on this?

Also if anyone has a Gilbert and is really happy with it, do tell me why so that I can feel better about my decision.

Call Andy to find out if he will be at a tournament near your house. He was at the Glass City. Find out if any of the cue dealers will be there. It is also a good place to get ideas on design.

I have 2 of his cues. A jump/break that I will sometimes use as a player and a regular cue. Both good quality and playing cues. My player has a ivory joint. The other a phenolic.

I would get the type of joint that balances out the design of the cue. To me when I am shooting I can't tell or even think about the type of joint the cue has. If it is properly installed they all do the same thing.. joint the two piece together. I know others feel differently.

DCC is only 1 1/2 months away. I think you can wait.

I have a 3/8th-10 from Andy.

lso if anyone has a Gilbert and is really happy with it, do tell me why so that I can feel better about my decision.
I couldn't be happier.

also www.cueaddicts.com has a large selection of gilberts to look at as well as many other fine cue makers to look at.

Hey rlw,

Thanks a MILLION for that URL, it's really awesome! I do wish they had more wood options to toy around with, but this is certainly a good start for sure!

Yea I've seen the ones at cueaddicts, but I didn't really see anything that I liked and could afford, at the same time. Plus I guess it's the fun of really building a custom custom.

I'm not quite sure about the AG phenolic joints, but I do know that he makes Ivorene joints. Is that what you mean? If so, how would you compare the hit between the ivory joint and the phenolic joint? Is the Ivory joint much softer?

I'm not looking to use the AG J/B as a playing cue though, I'd rather have them separate...plus my sledge works great for me right now.

Yea, I thought about it again and I think I can definitely wait till the DCC. When will you be there? It'd be great to meet you. BTW, I never really got down to answering your pm about the snooker cues that time...I believe it was the same time you kinda left for a bit and then came back with a different ID. If you'd still like a response let me know yea.

Does the joint pin really affect play in your opinion?

Yea, AZ has just been RAVING about AG cues...I know AG just had a price hike of about $75 for the basic cue, and I'm trying to snag one before it'll rise again, which I'm very sure it will.

Does anyone know where I can go to to see a range of possible wood types for a cue? thanks!

I'll more than likely be in Springfield, IL around Christmas if you want to come down and hit some with my Gilbert J/B. His J/B's play every bit as well as his regular players. Let me know and I'll make a decision on when I plan to go.

I would suggest looking at several cue websites so you can see what different woods look like when they're actually turned. Here are a couple that I like:

www.iconcue.com
www.billiardcue.com
www.cueaddicts.com
www.classiccues.com
www.hercek.com
www.skipwestoncues.com
www.murraytucker.com
www.mcwortercues.com
www.motteycues.com
www.timscruggs.com
www.chalkers.com
www.ilovecues.com
onthehill.net

I'm sure you'll be able to find a few others as well...

Do you have a design in mind?

Since he said that he couldn't find anything on cueaddicts.com that he liked and could afford I'm assuming he's in the $600-800 range.

Hey Zack, you're right on the money....I'm a poor college student so right around 600-900 is what I'm willing to spend. AG quoted 450 for the basic, but I'm thinking some veneers and pretty ring work so that will cost about 600, and if I do more points and possibly some ivory inlays, I know I'm looking about 800 plus, but I definitely wanna spend less than 900 for sure.

No, I SUCK at this creating a custom cue thing, I've tried drawing and all and it's not that I'm a bad artist - I'm actually decent - but I'm just not creative with the color and wood combinations and all. And I've been on AZ for a while and I've seen all the beautiful cues posted and I've also looked at a lot of cues online, but making my own is just pretty tough.

I hate cue design theft too, but I'm looking at JMWs, Benders, Scruggs and even a Szam for inspiration.

That's why I was looking for a program that I could input different woods and all into it for reference, but the one I've seen so far only has like 12 of the most common ones.

hiya raemondo...

i have the exact same thing. u know what?

as im a architect and a perfect 3d designer, and im gonna shrugz make me a custom cue to,and i want to be sure of the design, how i create a perfect realistic 3d cue in autocad, and use 3dstudio to add the materials and effects etc.

if people could post samples of wood i could use for the materials, once the cue is designed in 3d, we could do endless combinations of color posibilities, inlays, etc.

check the post out. ill post it now.
