Going to start running tournaments at the local pool room and I need help on making brackets. As far as where to put the byes and how many. Advice or links would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I'm partial to Challonge.com - but really any online bracket generator should work. I'd be willing to bet there's an Excel template that has been setup for brackets, feeding players from one sheet into the bracket sheet, etc.

I'll throw my hat into the ring and mention my website for running pool tournaments. It's called nomadpool.com and it is completely FREE. There's a big green button on the front page where you can create and configure your own tournament.

You tell it which venue the tournament is running at so it will pre-configure the amount of tables. You can always remove tables if you're not using them all. If you need a venue added, just email support@nomadpool.com and let me know the details such as name, address and how many tables it has.

Once you create the tournament, people can sign up using their own free Nomad account. If someone doesn't have an account and doesn't want to create one, you can just write their name in to make it easy on yourself.

You can confirm all of the signups as they pay by switching a little switch next to their name. The switch flips from red to green to show that they've paid.

Once everyone is paid, you can start the tournament by simply clicking a button. Nomad will then draw the whole bracket with any needed BYEs in the correct spots and randomly fill in the players. No need to spend a bunch of time manually drawing out the bracket by hand.

Since Nomad knows how many tables are being used, it calls up as many matches as it can and assigns each one to a specific table. As you report who won each match, it will call up the next available match onto the next available table. It even sends out text messages to let players know that they're up, who they're playing against, and on which table.

So after you hit start, all you really have to do is report the winner of each match until it's over. It pretty much runs itself.

There's also a way to put the waiting list up on a tv which really helps to give the players a sense of when they'll play next. I used to get asked "how long till I'm up?" about 94 times per night until I added the TV feature. Now I'm asked that question not even once per tournament and when it does happen, I can just point to the TV.

If you have a live stream going through ustream, then you can tell Nomad your ustream channel(s) and it will embed the stream(s) into the tournament's page. This way the people sweating the matches via the internet can see both the stream and live brackets on the same page.

This is all completely free for everyone involved. If you have any questions, just ask! You can reply here or email me at support@nomadpool.com. I love answering questions and getting feedback!

My limited experience with Ingen was quite good. They have a free trial, the paid version isn't that expensive, $75 I believe. It is a powerful tool and has lots of features.

Detroit Larry,

Thanks for the site. I just set up an account and ran a fictitious tournament to see how easy it is to use. It was very simple, but did not draw brackets that I could tell. I have found people like to see the lay of the land. Is there any way to draw out the bracket, both losers and winners side?

Once you hit start, Nomad draws the brackets and puts them into tabs at the top. You should see "Waiting List", "Winners", "Losers", "Timings", etc. The Winners/Losers tabs are for the brackets.

Thanks for your interest! Let me know if you have any other questions.

What happen to Marty Free ? hope you do well my friend. Please advertise on AZ and let everyone know........ Rich.

Ran last Saturday nights tourney with no problems. Still need to know where to put the byes but got some help. I need a laptop BAD. I want to use the program that "deadstick" sent me a link to. As far as Marty goes he's been asked not to come back. He has not "moved on" on his own accord as per some questions. He was asked to leave because of his attitude and dealings with customers. By all means check Gradys facebook for more info. I believe it doesn't go into exact detail but check it out all the same. It's business as usual at Gradys, tournaments will still be going strong. Business will continue to go strong. Crystal is a stand up individual, I as well as alot of people are behind her and support her and will continue to keep the pool room going. Come by and say hello and play. Thanks to all.

Byes

Hello, I've been running two weekly tourneys for about 5 years this is how I do my Byes. Take a 16 player bracket for example there are 8 matches in the 1st round. The bracket is split with 4 matches apiece in each division. I start my Byes on the 1st match and if I need 2 byes then use the 5th match which is the 1st match of the bottom division of that bracket. If I need 3 Byes I use the 1st 3rd and 5th match, 4 Byes 1st 3rd 5th and 7th matches, so as to avoid a double Bye on the Losers side. Where it gets tricky is when you can't avoid a double Bye on the losers side. You still need to try and keep it as evenly spaced as possible. And late entries are also placed in evenly. Start your tourney table assignments w the top alternately of both divisions and work your way down. Match 1 and match 5 then match 2 and match 6 and so on. Also play two rounds of winners side before starting the losers side it will actually lessen the wait in the long run. Then run two rounds of losers side then alternate winners and losers side. I usually condense winners side to one table which allows the losers side to catch up. Hope this helps, qfans
