need idea's/ solutions to my problem

Hi all,

ive got this problem:
ive been playing pool for a year and a half now, and i feel its closly starting to get time to change my cue. right now its a 30$ J&J with a lepro tip on thats harder then a concrete tip, and being a snooker player from origin, playing with very soft tips, it really doesnt feel any good when i play it.

now, if i lived in the usa, the solution would be easy.
go to a shop or any other place where they sell custom and production cue's, shoot with some, and see wich feel u like. what joint u like, what tip u like, what shaft u like etc.

Butt... i live in belgium. there arent any shops or poolhalls, or players who have custom cue's, so i have no option at all to play with some and see what feels right for me.

so how i could i solve this problem , and know wich cuebuilder makes the cue's that i like to play with?

should i just go by what most players here like? Ts, bob frey's?
or is there any other option to test cues?

im going to holland this newyear, but i dont think they got custom cue's either? should i try all the production cue's i can find: Cuetecs, predators, shonn's, etc and se wich i like and buy it? or? what else could i do :s

i cant afford to buy cue's here on the forum , try them, send them back, buy another one, try it, send it back etc.. this would cost me a fortune in shipping.

im lost.. anyone has a brilliant idea?

is there any way, customs cues could be compared to production cue's in europe?
for example, a Ts plays like a shonn, a Bof frey plays like a cuetec, a SW plays like a viper, etc.. (i know i know, it sound stupid, but im lost...) how am i suposed to buy something i have no option to test?

Try some of the other players cues at tourneys you attend? LePro tips aren't really that hard and I don't know any cuemaker who puts a tip softer than a LePro on their cues unless you ask for it. If I was you I would find a tip I was comfortable with before I ordered a new cue, if you get a new cue that has a triangle or moori hard you may hate the feel of the cue just because the tip is so hard. Maybe try a sniper or moori s? I think any non-layered tip that is softer than a LePro IE elkmaster is going to mushroom alot on you. Just my 2 cents of course

This may go against prevailing wisdom; but I do not think that trying out many cues is the answer to your dilemma. You have not played long enough to be able to discriminate between the various options.

Here are some things many can agree on:

Players can get used to any type of cue.

You have years to learn how to play with any cue you choose.


Therefore; get a "low deflection" shaft (Predator 314 or OB-1), with a medium to hard tip. You can experiment with different tips later. The "low deflection" shafts mentioned should be easy to fix/replace if needed in the future; and can be used with a variety of butts so you can be sure to find one that you like. They also should be a little easier to use as you try to master heavy English (ie. less squirt = less you have to allow in aiming = a little more room for error). While we will never have consensus that these shafts are "superior", we can hopefully agree that they are good enough for a talented amateur player. JMO (but an easy solution for your problem).

Sol-man....maybe your LePro became what I call "ICY", after a year and a half even a soft LePro can get rock hard with as much play as you put on it. I like them when they get like that, but you have to constantly groom them to keep from miscuing. I switched from LePro's to Triangles. They seem more consistent IMO, but kind of the same feel.

exactly Gerry, they are good after uve done some work on them,
but after 10 racks, they just shine like if they where mirrors. i really hate my tip. (i think its a le pro, as someone once told me that where the standard tips on a J&J playing cue, but im not sure :s they dont look layered). i have to work so often on them that i go true tips faster then i go true underwear and often i dont have time or dont want to spend my concentration on grooming a tip between every match.

wbm: u are right im not experienced enough yet. (but i have played 10y of snooker before the pool) and i just cant seem to get used to how a (mine) poolcue feels. ive got years to learn, but id like to learn with a cue i know i like id hate to find in 10y time a cue construction that i would like even better. one thing i know for sure. I HATE MY J&J playingcue!!!! its not even worth his 30$!! ITs that bad honestly

ive played once with a P2 curly maple and a 314, that weighted 17.5oz (mine is 20oz) and it felt alot better. (im not talking about the englisch), im used to play with a high delfection shaft now. it just felt much more the feedback of the cue at the moment of impact with the cb. maybe its just the weight? maybe me snookercue's weighted alot less then poolcue's, and thats why im having a hard time to get used to it.on the other side... u are right , that its easyer to buy a new predator or ob-1 shaft, then to find a custom shaft that plays the same way.... u have a very good point. i never thought about this.
