Hello, I lucked out and got a Grizzly lathe at a great price off of craigslist!

So i was talking to a cue maker friend of mine and he suggested getting a hardinge/sjorgen 2j collet chuck set up instead of using a three or six jaw chuck.

Anyone use this type of setup? I'd like to hear your feedback.

Or, is this overkill?

2J collets are good but not so good when you have odd sizes of things to chuck-up.
I know one local repair guy who uses them to change tips and leaves divots on the shaft right below the ferrule.
Set Tru 6-jaw gives you more flexibility .

I can almost bet who gave you that information. I have a 3J, which is pretty close to 2Js. 2J's are hard to find with the cheaper companies, which means Hardringe, which means almost a $100 a collet after shipping. 3J are closer to $75 and are still pretty main stream items. The 2J are being done away with according to Sjorgren when I ordered my chuck.

If the same person I am thinking recommended your to collet chucks, he has made plastic ones, so no marking the shafts as Joey mentioned. I have a 3J to 5C adapter and machined plastic ones since I wasnt setup to make the ones he made, which means no marking shafts.

I have used both for what we do with them and as far as accuracy and speed, they cant be beat. But I am trying to sell mine because I dont have all the collets and I am tired of spending money. I have almost 40. If it doesnt sale soon, I will put it back on and start buying collets again. It is the Cadillac of chucks, but that is just my opinion.
