Need info on hanging light

I searched here, but couldn't find anything that specific.

I got a nice used Brunswick table light that I would like to use to replace a ceiling fan currently over the table. I have the following questions:

1. Standing on the table is a no-no right?

2. After removing the fan, should I cover and install a new box at one corner of the chain, or just run a short wire over to the existing box with some sort of cover on it?

3. It seems like toggle eyes are the way to go...

I too will jump on board... I got a cheap $150 4 bulb light that looked nice enough, centered the table around it. Then I also found a used Brunswick light, it's been sitting up against the wall next to the table for 6 months now. Eventually I need to hang it up...

I think I can get to the existing light easily to get it down, it's light enough. My questions, in addition to those posted:

- Should I strip the plug to connect it to the wires in the ceiling (where the fan was and old light is now), or wire up some sort of plug and plug it in?

- Should I use 4 chains, one at each eye bolt on the light, or 2 wrapped around and up to something in the ceiling?

- If I can't hit joists with the install, will toggle bolts work given the weight or do I need to somehow hit joists?

- I think I read somewhere that it should be installed about 78" off the floor. Given that it's about 10" high, the top would be 88", and I have 8' ceilings upstairs so would I just use short (8" or so) pieces of chain to connect each point on the light?

- How should I best align the fasteners in the ceiling... Would I gently center the light on the table, project a laser or something up to mark the spot, then drill/install eye bolts etc. and hoist the light up? Seems like it would work pretty easily if everything was marked properly...


I'm horrible with this type of stuff, so please keep that in mind... sorry for jacking the OP's thread, but inquiring minds want to know and not f@#$ up their light or table... :)

You could use plumb bobs to get it lined up. I am not sure if drywall will hold up the light, its pretty heavy. I just put my Brunswick light on top of the table then I lifted one end at a time so my wife could clip the chains on, then we leveled it after both ends were hung. We did not need to stand on the table, I didnt like that idea, she just needed a ladder next to table to connect chain clips. I used those clips they use for rock climbing or key chains, not sure what they are called but they are common at hardware stores. I had my light as low as 72", now its about 84" from the ground, it really made no difference except now that its higher I dont hit my head on it anymore. I read somewhere that the light was supposed to be around 38" above playing surface, thats how I ended up at 72" from ground. That was too low.
 
Well, I hung my light last night. I had to remove a ceiling fan, put in a cover plate (that's not quite big enough), then mount toggle hooks for the chains.

It was pretty easy since I got a new diamond pro 8', that is waiting on cloth. I got the fitted cover for it, so I just did the work standing on the foam cover.

I'm going to convert it to a 1'x4' LED panel when the panel gets here tomorrow.

I need to find a better cover plate, and then paint the wire running from the side hook going into the cover for the ceiling fan outlet.

Edit to add stuff that came up in discussion:
1. Diamond recommends mounting their lights 48" above the playing surface, so that's what I did, even though it's not a diamond light with the fluorescent bulbs.
2. I used 2 chains. Toggle eyes or bolts are rated for 75# each. Diamond recommends turnbuckles for easier mounting, but I didn't use them. I was still able to get both sides right at 48" with the chains.
3. I stripped the plug, and wired it into the existing ceiling fan outlet.
4. Alignment was a royal pain in the butt in my case, as my ceiling is raised, and the raised portion isn't centered in the room. I marked on the pool table cover where I would want the mounting points in the ceiling, and then used a plumb bob and a helper to transfer this to the ceiling. Worked perfect, but it wasn't easy on my tip toes sucking my gut in for like 10 minutes straight to get the alignment right.
