Need some advice

I just got a andy gilbert cue in today with 3 shafts. I went home at lunch and hit a few racks with it. I know this might be premature and i'm defenitely going to play some more with the cue but i'm just not crazy about how it feels to me personaly. I have been playing with a matt crisp cue that i just love, but got the bug to try something different. My question is if it doesn't come around what would some of you that have had a lot of customs try to trade it for? The thing that i love about my crisp is how stiff of a hit it has. Any idea's on some comparable cues? Thanks for any advice i have not tried many other customs so just looking for some advice from some of you that have.

I am a firm believer that an unhit cue needs time to get "broken-in". I feel that the shaft needs to absorb some hits to let the wood breathe or expand/contract. I have had numerous brand new cues that I did not like the hit at all but by the 3rd (or 4th) time hitting with it, it started to feel sweet.

That being said, it might just be my imagination!

I am not a professional pool player, but, a darn good player. I have sold over 2700 cues since 1978 and I have hit many different brands. My personal cue I have shot with was made in Feb. of 1998 and the first time I picked it up and hit the first ball, I knew it was the cue for me. I have also picked up cues and tried to piddle paddle with them to fit what I like in a cue and yet have ever been able to satisfy my mind with one that does not feel right. You had a feeling to try something different, so... if it did not feel correct, sell it and try the next one. Andy Gilbert makes a fine cue, no doubt, but, you can't force yourself to use something that is just uncomfortable to you. My thought, if any cue does not feel right, or in most cases, IF YOU CAN FEEL AND NOTICE it, then your head is not where it should be as your head should not notice the cue. Sell it, enjoyed owning it and move on to the next.
Heck, a lot of people like new Corvettes, I prefer the 65, 66 and 67's, but, their all Vette's.

There is a reason there are hundreds of guys making cues (and honestly very few to make a living out of it) there are just so many different tastes in the look and hit of a cue. I do agree however that a cue needs to feel good to you and if it doesn't try something else however before I get rid of a nice custom for something else I ask some questions. What tip is on your current cue vs Andy's? What size is the tip? Are they the same? What length and type of ferule are on each? Are the shaft tapers the same? The answer to all these questions is probably not yes so you are comparing apples to oranges. Try tweaking some differences before you trade the Gilbert. New tip, match the tip sizes, different ferule, even ask Andy to make another shaft matching the taper on your Crisp. All these factors make a huge difference in the playability of a cue. IMHO you might want to one give the cue a couple weeks to see if it grows on you and if not then investigate some changes to try to match it to your style before you give up on it

Trial and error. Nothing wrong with trying out different hits and cues. If you bought the cue here on AZB and it doesn't come around for you, ask for a refund. I had this happen once to myself, I sold a cue, the guy did not care for the hit, returned it for a refund minus shipping. This is not an uncommon thing here. OR, as you mentioned, trade or sell it for something else, I personaly like these two Omen's I have and one is at Pete's getting a full resto job. Make sure you try all three shafts out before you decide what you will do though, this can make a world of difference with the hit.

Thanks for the replys guys. I went a head and traded the gilbert off. Just couldn't get the feel for it. I ended up trading for a eddie farris. I'm really happy with the way it hits and feels. But I'm pretty much addicted to trying out different cues at this point to I'm sure it wont be long before it's time for another.;)
