Need some Break Cue advice....the value kind, not the $$$$$ kind.

Vague sorry bro

this doesn't help me :) so you suggest to get the Fury (best value for $$$) or pony up for Rick's?

Sorry I guess that was vague as hell.I have spent many hours debating which is the best before I got my Predator. My friend has a Fury and I use it during league a lot. They hit very similiar I think to the BK2.Have you tried any break cues to see how they hit at all?If so which ones?It is a very individual feel and will take a lot of breaks to see which one you like.Iam sorry again for being vague.I like them both to tell the truth. This subject drove me nuts for a long time.Rick is good person you could trust for business and was given him props. If you have the money you won't get more break cue for the money.Good luck in your search.

I have an NG01 mcdermott and love it. I did contact them about the tips as I was concerned that my league would follow the BCAPL rules. They do have a new tip now. I don't know if it is an option from the stock NG0 series. Below is the email from Jayme.

I also sent Jayme and email and he said they are changing to the new tips in a month or so so might be worth a little wait. Fury, McDermott, Sneakiest.....Decisions, decisions.

Vpr80,

I don't really know the difference between the cues you mention except that it is a noticeable difference between a custom cue and a production break cue. (mostly in the tone and the feel) If you haven't tried a production break cue with a phenolic tip you should find someone you know that has one to let you hit a few and see how you like it. In my experience some of the best feeling break cues are just a sneaky pete with a shaft that has a stiff taper.

I tend to switch between a couple break cues all the time. (BK2 and an 18 oz sneaky pete) Break cues with phenolic tips break good when you hit em right but when you're struggling they can be hard to control. IMO a phenolic tip is better for a medium control break but when you want to wind it up it can be hard to manage the hop.

The bottom line when breaking is you have to control yer rock. It doesn't matter if you hit it 35 mph if it flies off the table. That is why I believe that so many people like the BK2 with their low deflection shafts cuz it tends to go straighter if you hit a little off center.

As far as miscueing is concerned I haven't noticed any difference with a phenolic compared to a le pro. I try to hit the center of the ball when I break---> theoretically I shouldn't even need chalk.

happy cue hunting,

Dud

I use a J&J sneaky jump/break --- swapped out tip for a compressed triangle med/hard tip with a shortened ferrule --- pretty happy with it and very cheap!

i hear the Tiger Icebreaker is pretty good

the only thing i would change from my current jump/break is a phenolic ferrule with perhaps i tad more harder tip

I also have another j&j jump/break that has a phenolic tip --- chalk (even with grooves in it) does not hold well with tip, and it is a lot easier to jump the cue ball off the table and/or miscue --
good luck

On tip: I agree with you on that one, but none of the ones mentioned seemed to have any of the popular tips and most of them have the phenolic tips. I don't know which tip the Stinger has and looks like the Lucasi has a Triangle tip. If I am going to pay to change the tip, I might as well just do it my chapie J&J that I already have, but that one needs a re-wrap so all together it would cost as much as the Spark Break cue. In which case, I rather just get the Spark or Panther cue.

Unfortunately, I haven't really seen any in the local pool shops, they are not very common in my area, so I kind of need to buy it sight unseen.

I think I'll just get the Panther cue and see how it like it. If I don't like the tip, I can always change it to a leather one right? Although I really like the Fury cue on Ebay for a bit more. Are those good? What's better the Fury or the Stinger?

i just bought a fury yesterday and its in the mail. 2 of my team mates in my league have furys and 2 others have stingers. i like the fury way better hands down in playability and at half the price, that makes it even more appealing. i have also used j&j, old gulyassy, new gulyassy, and varneys and like the fury better than those as well. the only j/b i've used that i've liked as much as the fury is the lightning bold, but at 13 oz...its not for every one.

As far as phenolic tips has been out, I haven't heard much people complaining about them.

I cannot stand them, you get zero feel, no cueball control (you sometimes want to put a slight bit of tops or bottoms on the break depending on certain factors with the table speed, how clean the balls are, ect...) and for the player that is not perfectly accurate on the break they have the added chance of misscues. The only time a phelonic tip is even acceptable IMO is when you have the perfect conditions to hit center ball head ball breaks on fast cloth with clean new balls and even at that point you can get 99% of the power from a very hard breaking tip and have the added feel and confidence the leather gives you to get that extra 1% in cue speed through the cueball.

J&J all the way

I hate to promote a chinese low-ball cue but this IS a good value. I use a J&J J/B palmwood with a Talisman break tip and it works great as a breaker and a shooter. 14mm tip and conical shaft reduce deflection.

Plan B. J&J makes an interesting J/B cue called "Kaiser" with a wood pin in the shaft. I put a White D tip on this puppy and can now jump bigtime on a low budget.

I've been hitting a Mc D Stinger recently , really nice J/B all around , as good as any other IMO. Under $150 new from the 'bay thu authorized dealers which get's you the lifetime warranty.

J&J are real good for the price but at a lesser quality , I'd put Furys in the same class along with Players for the under $100. Personal preferrence from there.

As for phenolic , in reality it's not as big a deal as people imagine or assume. I go either way and really the biggest difference is sound and maintainance. I also play some BCA here and there and the 'ban' seems to be pretty loose.

Last thing about phenolic , don't underestimate the amount of english you can use with phenolic. I play full racks with a break cue from time to time and can put full table length draw on the CB with phenolic tip. If you are really miscueing alot with phenolic , look at your stroke and not your tip.

Other than find something you like and can afford , honestly theres not a huge difference in most break cues in that price range.

hey guys....as always thanks a ton for the great feedback.

i spoke with McDermott and they were super nice about getting me a Stinger for the best price AND with their new leather tip already installed. can't really ask for anything else because it seems like a really nice cue with the leather cue so we'll see how i like it.

thanks
