need some help with my metal lathe

I recently bought a jet 13x40 metal lathe. It is used but I know the guy I bought it from and he did not hardly ever use it anyhow I would like to put a chuck on the backside of the head stock. I talked to the guy at enco but he was not very helpfull. Anyone who has done this and can give me some pointers I would greatly appreciate it.
 
Have you considered doing a 'search' on rear chuck(s)?
There have been countless threads on this topic.

I had an adapter machined that matched the double metric nut on the end of the spindle, and then was 2 1/4-8 on the outside so I could thread on a regular lathe chuck. Removed one of the metric nuts, screwed on the adapter, then mounted the chuck. Works like a charm. I have a 13-40 Jet belt drive. Not sure how the gearhead is set up back there. You do have to remove the rear cover to use the adapter like I did.

I did exactly as you did on the Jet that I have except that I backed up one of the metric nuts against my adapter to lock it so that it would never come loose. I also put in four set-crews equally around the back, right in front of the chuck so as to true the chuck to the spindle. I installed a light weight wood scroll chuck on the back that performs surprisingly well. Maybe I'll go back and take a picture or two in a couple of minutes.

Thats a nice looking chuck set-up Dick but will it hold the butt end. Doesnt look like its big enough for that.

heres the easyest way with almost known machining joe porpers chuck and rear fixture when they come all you have to do is put the fixture in the lathe use a boring bar and take a few thousands off the whole thing should take less then 30 mins the chuck open to 1.5 inches ill post pictures of mine after i wake up

hope this helps we can also machine one for you to your specs i would sugest the porper chuck thats whats in the picture when he buys these chucks there undersized he has them machined out to 1.5 therear chuck is the only way to fly i just bought 2 jet 13x40 lathes this past year and both have them on it i also have a national and 3 porpers evry machine has the rear chuck

porper lathe

same setup here works great they are pricey through porper but no hunting and fishing less then 30 mins your ready to go

Thanks for the pics guys, I have an Atlas 10" that I want to do this with. I have a 3" bison chuck an adaptor plate, but it needs to be bored and tapped to 1-1/4" x 20 still. How would one align a rear chuck with the front one?

After You Get The Chuck Mounted You Lossen The Bolts That Hold It To The Adapter Plate Keeping Them Tight Not Too Loose
Then Put A Dail Indicator On Side Of The Lathe Chuck Up Something True In The Chuck Use The Dail Indicator Too Get It To 0 Also Do The Same With Your Front Chuck If Not Already True You Should Be Good To Go Merry Christmas
 
In Some Cases You May Not Be Able To Put Back On The Rear Cover So Be Carful When Using This Has To Do With Distance Between Chucks On Bigger Lathes There Is Less Room To Work With Check That Out Before Doing Anything This Way You Can Grab Both Ends When Working On A Shaft Or Butt ON SOME LATHES THERE IS NOT MUCH TO WORK WITH

It will open to 1.5 inch. I paid 56.00 for the chuck including shipping. I made the mount from a 3" solid bar of aluminum I had picked up at a scrap yard for 1.00 a pound so I have around 60.00 invested in it total. I had a 6 " scroll chuck on an Enco lathe for years but after mounting this one on the Jet I changed the one on the Enco to the same as this one to eliminate a lot of the weight flying around back there. If I could find a good small scroll chuck that uses a backing plate, at a reasonable price, I would convert to one of those but they are all to big and heavy or to expensive as this chuck took some fiddling to get to run really true.

I bored the through hole to around 1.45 inch so that it will accept the largest cue that I want to put through it. The hole started out smaller. The jaws open wider so that I can use a delrin collet to protect the cue.

The easy way to get a chuck to run true, is to mounnt it onto a faceplate. Then using 3 or 4 capscrews with belville washers under the heads. You lightly snug the screws, then using a DTI indicate the chuck in. When happy with position, tighten screws. On Cylindrical grinders , we often leave the screws just snug all the time. And tap in the work piece with the spindle running at around 100 rpm. Takes about15 seconds to clock in a piece. Less if you get lucky.
