Ok heres the deal.I sold a new cue to a friend about a month ago.He plays with it for several hours one night.The next night I bump into him and he says the shaft is real tight when you get it screwed down to about the last 3 turns.We had a few beers and nothing else was ever said about it.Since then I've acquired the cue back because he owed me money on it.I got it out the other day and was cleaning the shafts and retipping them to resell to another guy and when I got the butt out and screwed the problem shaft down I got to that point about 3 turns to go and it gets real tight.I had these probs a few times in the past but do not remember what I did to fix them.The joint is flat faced wood to wood with a 3/8x10 pin.All I know to do is get a tap and chase the threads,maybe got some trash in them.I may be making a big deal out of nothing but the guy I sold it to is not happy.Thanks for any input from the people that know!!

Atlas actually sells three different size taps for 3/8-10. I like to tap a straight hole with the small tap then use the middle tape to make the threads a little looser. You may want to check the shaft with a loose pin to make sure it isn't the pin. Also the size hole drilled for the tap will have an effect on this. I use a 5/16 drill for my finished size on the hole then tap.

Are you sure you drilled and tapped to the same depth? Anytime I have that problem that is the first thing I check. The front of the tap is tapered so if it doesn't go in deep enough the pin will be to big for the threads when it nears the bottom of the tapped shaft.

I didnt build the cue.It came from the philippines.1 of seven or eight so far that i've gotten.The first time it was played with there were no probs.When I got the cue back,the first thing I noticed was the joint protectors screwed together laying in one of the pockets of the case.That tells me he never used them like they were intended to be used.Probably just has a piece of trash in the threads..??

Or moisture, the caps are also used to prevent moisture from getting into the shaft end. The threads may have swelled slightly and may need to have a tap ran thru it. Also, try cleaning the pin with some alcohol, dry it then try it again. From my experiences, if the wood threads in the shaft are dirty, then only a tap will clean them as using any cleaning fluid may cause swelling of the wood.

Something you may want to try is drilling a 9/32 hole. 5/16 is the referenced size for a 3/8 machine screw but a 3/8 x 10 screw used on cues has a much smaller minor diameter. You will find a much nicer fit. Don't take my word for it experiment on a piece of scrap to see what you think. You will get a feel like a radial screw when you screw it together, more precision. Give it a try.
 
Drop a pencil down the hole to use a depth gauge or toothpick. you might also check to see if the shaft is cross threaded. Also check to see if the pin is tight on the cue.

I made a set of joint protecters so tight to the pin i accually screwed the pin out of the cue. tTurn out the pin was glued into a larger hole with no threads.

I'm not one to mess something up.I'm not gonna perform anything until I see it's the proper thing to do.I'll figure it out without any problems.I do appreciate all of the advice.I'll post what the solution and outcome is.

Since no one mentioned it, I take it that you've used candle/shaft wax on the pin already but with no use? If not you might want to give it a go?
