I was having a break contest with a friend tonight and a very unfortunate situation happened. Here is how everything unfolded.
We stared out doing 3 breaks, highest total number of balls made without scratching wins $50. After about 5rounds of thisi'mstuck $50.We raise the bet to $100,i go on a winning streak and am up like $750. I let him raise the bet to$300 a set. I continue to win a few more matches until he is stuck $1750. At this time he proceeds to try and raise the bet again to $600 a set. I say no 350 is as high as i go and he says no we are playing for 600. We argue about this for afew minutes with me not giving in. Finally i say if he doesn't drop this i'm going to quit. Needless to say he keeps insisting we are going play for 600 so i get fed up up and quit. Now he is refusing to pay memy money becase he says ii just quit him cuz i wanted to book a winner. I had no problem staying at $350.

so was i wrong?

You should have took your money in the beginning then if desired rebet afterward! but I should think you already gathered this!

Should have paid after every set because in real life...there are no friends between gamblers. He will want to play more, even if it takes some woofing...and you should agree to pay after he settles up and not before. Good luck...

A bet can only be established by mutual agreement. No one party can unilaterally determine the bet, so in that sense you were right.

Now regarding the other matter, as the previous poster hinted, you need to post up (preferably) or at least require payment after every unit, especially when you're playing for more than chump change. When you allow opponents to gamble on the wire, you can easily fall victim to the golden rule, as in "he who has the gold makes the rules". Although you had won the sets, he still had the gold, and as you now realize, one of the standard ploys used when one is behind and playing on the wire is to try to change the momentum by demanding to increase the bet and threatening not to pay, if the demand is not agreed to. It's even been written about in a delightful little book called The Hustler's Handbook.

Good luck in getting paid. I hope you don't end up having to chalk it up to experience!

I don't like to gamble, but I do have an unbiased opinion nonetheless.
IMO, there can be no raising of the bet unless it is mutually agreed upon. You were right to do what you did. Though as Mr. Lucky said, you should have posted the money up front, and paid each other back and forth contest by contest.
I like to just play pool and don't gamble to make it fun and interesting, but I can't imagine any other way a break contest could be even vaguely interesting. I take that back, it wouldn't even be interesting betting on it. lol.
BTW, according to my arithmetic, I don't see how you could possibly go from up 750 bucks to up 1750 bucks at 300 buck per match. Sure you didn't go to up 1650?

As others have said, you should have posted or paid off after each round. At this point in time, you might make it known that he owes you the money, which will do damage to his reputation. Then you can offer to play for higher stakes AFTER you are paid. Or you may get him to settle for a lesser amount.

Finally, if you are capable, you can threaten to kick his ass. You have learned a lesson about friendship, money owed can definitely get in the way. Whether it's from gambling, a loan or any other debt.
