Hi guys. Need all of your opinion on the ranking of top cue makers. If you had a choice to purchase one stick for play and collection, who you think is the best cue maker? If you had to rank these cue makers
(Bill Stroud, Richard Black, Paul Motty, Phillipi), who would you say comes in 1, 2, 3, and 4?

Your opinion is greatly appreciated,

John

Mottey
Stroud
Black
Phillippi

Only part I had a hard time deciding was who to put first. Based upon my personal preference, Mottey is my #1 from the list that you had supplied.

I agree with Ross with two small tweaks.

1) Mottey
2) White (similar to Mottey. Builds cues out of the Mottey shop. Excellent cuemaker)
3) Stroud
4) Phillippi
5) just about every other cuemaker out there
6) Richard Black

Now on a serious note. Paul Mottey without a doubt one of the best cuemakers out there today. I rank his cues up there in playability alongside the very best. He makes some of the most beautiful, streamlined, classic designs in the business. His creaqtive and artistic cues are also superior to most in quality and beauty. And as for playability, you won't find many others that compare. Jim White has been working in the Mottey shop for several years making cues with Paul and on his own. He has learned from the best as is apparant in his work. His designs are unique. He execution is top notch. His cues are just plain awesome. He is hands down the best "new" cuemaker in the industry.

Stroud is good and people seem to like Phillippi though for me, they are not quite as good. And as for Richard Black, well, let's just say that I could speak volumes about my distaste for his work.

I couldn't agree more (I like #5)!

You guys rock!! Thank you for your opinion.

I just can't believe that Motty is being ranked before Stroud. I always thought that Stroud's cue pricing is in the nose bleeding level due to the fact he is currently a legend....just like Earnie from Gina Cue. But wow, you guys agree on Motty is in front of Stroud.

Believe it or not, I ask some of these wonderful cue makers to rank themselves. They would not do it. I think that is just so professional. I guess they have lots of love in the cue making world. No one would say anything bad about another. That is just so cool.

Amazing. Hope I get more opinion on this.

Thanks guys.

Early JossWest cues (Stroud) are a hot ticket. His more recent work is not really as good as the price tag would indicate. This is not to say that his cues are not good. Just slightly overpriced. In short, with Mottey I have no complaints. With Stroud, there may not be many complaints but I could think of one or two.

I echo the statement above to an extent... This was the quandry that I had as to who to rank first. Bill S. is a cuemaking legend, however his prices are extremely high for his recent stuff... I'm a fan of his mid 90's work, as I am more of the traditionalist. His latest work starts out at probably $4K, which is probably not what the average playing cue goes for....

I think Mottey/JMW is the absolute best, hands down, all around cue there is as far as looks, quality, design, playability, and value.
