I agree with all of your thoughts on playing the smartest and safest way in a match. I actually don't like playing straight pool matches, just going for high runs. Real straight pool takes more patience than I possess, which is also why I don't like to play one pocket.

keith when you get your table and see how fast it is. you will see that opening the rack is the way to go. and not worrying about a couple balls past the side pockets.

I read Irving Crane used to spend considerable time playing himself safe. Could be thorough prep or just not breaking the continuity. I'd do it some times but wasn't consistent about it.

Watch old Grady Matthews straight pool videos and learn about correct patterns. Don't even try to get a high run unless you feel focused. When you miss it is often due to lack of focus.

I broke 100 five times at home over about 4 months of trying. High run 168. Blew the opening shot in rack 13. Diamonized Anniversary with 4 5/8 pockets.
