New 8-ball instructional DVD by Ralf Souquet (Deutsch)

@Newton: Jeg anbefaler, at du snakker enten norsk (hvilken dialekt spiller ingen rolle) eller engelsk, men ingen tysk :-Þ

Here's my attempt at a more colloquial translation (including one incomplete sentence, "His contribution to...", left as is):

"Ralf Souquet, 8 ball World Champion in 2008--called "The Kaiser" in the USA--provides insight into his strategic approach. With examples from games, Ralf Souquet presents his approach: why he plays the ball a certain way, what he's thinking while he does it, and where and above all why and how he positions the white cue ball. Ralf discusses important points and passes on his experience. His contribution to successful 8-ball play. These fundamental insights help enormously to improve one's own strategic game."

Here's a translation of the YouTube video--or at least here's what it sounds like to someone who hasn't spoken German for a while (and I'm sure I've mis-heard or misunderstood a thing or three):

Title: Think and Play like Ralf Souquet in 8-Ball - new DVD

"Hello, and a warm welcome. I'm Ralf Souquet, World Champion [something] in 8-ball. On this DVD, I show you examples of matches against a top player, Nicholas Ottoman (?), how I play 8-ball, how I think [about] 8-ball, and how I feel 8-ball. For that set of 11 games, I've provided analysis and commentary together with national trainer Andreas Huber. I hope you'll enjoy it.

(0:31 - ) start of commentary
Souquet: So here one can see that once again this is no cakewalk [no "easy party"]. The 2-ball isn't playable, and maybe one can break it out or bank it one rail into the opposite side pocket.

Huber: Although the breakout is really the smarter plan.

Souquet: The breakout is smarter, but then right at the beginning--that is, on the first shot--the 1-ball is difficult because it lies next to the right rail [the short rail].

Huber: [???]

Souquet: The layout for stripes isn't good, because the 13 sits against the 3, . . . and that's absolutely unplayable .... The 12 is behind the 4, though it's playable into the upper left corner pocket, but then one has to manage to get position, and that's just not good. Therefore I played the 1-ball, and I wanted to squeeze the white [the cue ball] between the rail and the 2-ball, and that actually worked quite well, exactly as it was planned, I played it a bit firmly.

Huber: But then despite [making it], you tried it again...

Souquet: Yes, and then I showed how else one could do it, a little bit softer--

Huber: A full hit on the ball

Souquet: Exactly, correct.

Huber: [something] . . . is it somewhat easier there?

Souquet: Well, continuing from that point would've been more difficult because the cue ball would be sitting next to the rail, you wouldn't have as many choices to get out of there...

Huber: That would suddenly [something something] an insurance ball

Souquet: Right, and then if you're straight in [on the 7-ball in the lower right corner], there are other problems

Huber: One can't get out of there, then.

Souquet: Precisely, because it would leave a straight in shot, and that's why I chose the first option--

Huber: .. . . Honestly, I have to admit that . . . wouldn't have guessed that one could shoot that ball in [the 3-ball].

---------------------------------------------

That's the best I could do.

Ralf is done with the translation to english by now, he told me it´s supposed to be finished today so i guess it will be available soon.

I've seen the video and thought it was a bit disappointing. They play a race to 11, if I remember correctly, and Ralf totally owns his opponent. It is entertaining to watch him play flawless 8-ball. He explains his patterns and often presents alternatives, which is nice. But most of the time the decisions are pretty obvious. There is no interesting match play involved, he is never faced with a REALLY tough layout (because of his good break), no pressure shots and no words on safety play.

I'd say, if you have problems finding good patterns on an open table (and/or are a big Ralf fan), you can take a look.
