Are roasted maple shafts the equivalent of a Kielwood shaft in terms of having a lighter front mass to reduce deflection? I didn’t notice any shaft size mentioned. Are all the shafts the same size? Thanks……I have zero experience with roasted maple shafts so I’m somewhat intrigued since I’ve been considering getting a Kielwood shaft for my Scruggs cue.

I suppose that depends on who did the roasting. The Kielwood part is a name for the wood after roasting per the below link.

In case anyone is interested in getting a Barnhart roasted maple shaft, I just did and am very pleased.
The tip isn’t what I normally use and I’ll get around to changing it but other than that, it is a sweet shaft.

The taper is outstanding, the stiff hit is exactly what I was hoping for, the appearance is splendid, and
the finish is fabulous. It is just a beautiful Kielwood shaft that has be be referred to as roasted maple
because of trademark infringement, But make no mistake that Kielwood shafts are indeed roasted maple.

The weight was 3.8 ozs and my cue butt is 14.55 ozs so the shaft meets my criteria for proportional weight
for the cue shaft and butt. And the hit is solid……Cory Barnhart’s roasted maple shafts only come in radial
threads. I don’t understand why he doesn’t include other big pin joints as an option. Nonetheless, Cory’s
roasted maple shafts seem better than other Kielwood shaft brands costing a whole lot more money too.

BTW, the packing that Martin used to ship the shaft was amazingly secure. You could toss the shaft off the
roof of a ten story building in the original packaging Martin used. The shaft would still be pristine after opening
the carton. But then again, you should expect superior service from Superior Cues. Thank you Martin.

In case any interested viewers are on the fence about getting one of these roasted maple shafts, I’ve had mine for about 10 days. Cory really does make a splendid shaft. Everyone at the pool hall was impressed with the finish, taper and stiffness. The shaft at 12.85mm feels like a thin 13mm with a long taper. The sight picture is great whether you use an open or closed bridge. Without any hesitancy, I can tell you that I wish I’d gotten one of his roasted maple shafts, i.e., Kielwood, long ago. If I could get him to make other big pin versions, he’d already have my order. So if you have a cue with a radial pin and have been mulling over adding a shaft, then this is the one you want to get. BTW, the fit on my cue is as seamless as if I had sent in my cue butt for a matching fit. However, I didn’t & the shaft is a perfect fit. My Scruggs cue is .840. Maybe it’s time to act?

Good review you provided. Would you consider it a longer taper? In my opinion, his maple shafts have a short/very stiff taper.

I would consider this a longer taper……by that I mean a typical pro taper, if there is such an animal, is in the
neighborhood of 12 “ or thereabout. This shaft is more akin to 14”. The shaft feels the same size in every bridge
variation I’ve tried using a tightly closed bridge for most of my shots and an open bridge as well. The shaft taper,
less so than the feel of the shaft with my closed bridge, is more apparent visually using my open bridge. When
using a closed bridge, it becomes more sensory or tactile when you don’t wear a pool glove which I’ve never worn
after playing pool for 63 years. The closed bridge interferes with seeing the entire shaft extend through the stroke
so it’s less visual and more feel. And let me compliment Cory on the finish. It arrived in pristine condition.

Can you comment on how far from the Tip the Pivot Point is? My Kielwood/Plain Maple Combo Set both start to expand in taper at about 15” and with the Pivot Point being 12.5” on the PM and 13” on the Kielwood, it makes for an awkward follow through on more forceful shots. For short shots, they’re OK, but the longer BHE shots unfortunately are best left with an open bridge due to the shaft getting thicker just after the bridge being set at the Pivot Point, so it appears mine may have a longer taper? I should mention the shafts which came with my Shane Gibson Custom Cue are seemingly “lower deflection” as indicated by the 1/2” ferrules. Personally, I’m trying to score some old school “higher deflection” Tight Ring Maple Shafts with a Pivot Point further up for this reason!

I did not put my calipers on the shaft and instead used my closed eyes and closed bridge to feel the shaft transition.
The shaft uses a short 1/2” ferrule so there’s 28 1/2 inches of wood. Between 13 and 14” is where I feel the shaft taper
change and it’s very gradual for the next 2-3” and becomes more apparent thereafter tactilly and visually too. I enjoyed
the feel of the shaft taper and the sight picture in an open bridge. And it does roll the cue ball with a more solid feel too.

Every single player that has tried my Scruggs cue and Barnhart RM shaft overwhelmingly praised the hit,
balance and straightness of their cue ball delivery. It’s the best hitting wood shaft I’ve ever played with.

I didn’t care for Cory’s choice of tips and so I changed it to a Kamui Black Clear Soft like my other cues.
As soon as I did, the shaft Cory made immediately changed from just playing good to really playing great.

If you have a radial joint cue and prefer wood shafts, do yourself a favor. Go get one of Cory’s RMS shafts.
The shaft looks terrific and plays the same. Superior Cues is a legitimate A+ resource for your pool needs.
