New Cloth - Slate Only?

was thinking this year instead of getting new cloth on everything, bed and rails, i might just stick with the same color (powder blue) and just have the slate bed done.

it normally runs me about $450 for everything. how much do you posters think i might save if i just have the bed done, and not the rails? that takes them the bulk of the time to install, doing the rails. however, i do realize that is a small part of the cloth purchase, that being what it takes to cover the rails.

just dont think i would like to spend $450 this year, but if i could get the bed done at a discount i might go ahead and do that. or do you posters see something wrong with doing the bed and not doing the rails?

i think $450.00 is way too high for cloth in your area..that's a downtown New York price !!!! shop around more....

DCP, I also think 450 sounds a little high. When you think about getting it done I can get you a price from the guy that set up my table if you would like.

As to your original question, I dont think it would save you as much as you think. There would be very little savings on the price of the cloth due to the way they cut it and where they get the rails from. And while the mechanic would save the time of removing and replacing the cloth on the rails (often removed by a helper that he has to pay anyway) the time it takes to take the table apart and recover the slate will often take enough time to charge a days wages anyway.

You strike me as someone that when he does something likes to have it done right. So if you want a lower price try and find someone that comes recommended but costs less, dont try to cut corners and end up not being happy with it.

Even if it saved you $120, is it worth saving $10 per month to take the risk of the rail cloth not matching the bed cloth? They would look a different color if the dye lots came out different, or you current cloth had faded, or just from normal use and soiling. I dont think you would be happy with it.

Hiya Doc!

The majority of the posters here seem to think that $450 is too much for the work and maybe they are right, but anyway, I think that if you are going to have it done, get the whole thing done so the cloth can break itself in evenly.

Talk to the local pool hall and find out who they use. The people that they use may be able to do the job for less.

the $450 is to recover everything with Simonis 860 on a 9 foot Gold Crown IV. and you guys are getting similar work done for way less?????

Woody,
p.m. me the guy that can do it for less.

i had two (2) estimates, both from Brunswick dealers in Evansville and Indianapolis, and the prices were very close, right around $450.

Im south of Boston and that 450/500 is the going rate up here for Simonis .........Iwish i could pay 300:o

If you live in an area with alot of table mechanics you can shop for a lower price, if not I would stick with who you have now, as long as you are happy with the work they provide for you. A self emplyoed table mechanic would ask for less than a dealer would.

Here in Michigan, the company I work for gets anywhere from 300 to 400 to do a refelt depending on how long it takes to get to the house... We charge by the hour at $100. I usually do it on the side for about $250... probably 175 if I didn't have to do the rails

I only paid 400 for mine, and that included new rubber on my rails as well as Simonis all the way around.

Simonis is less than 200 if you buy it off eBay...and yes it does take some labor to do rails. But the bed cloth is very easy if you know what you are doing. I don't mind paying for knowledge, as long as it's good knowledge.

It's funny, my current table took less than 3 hours to assemble and cover. Those guys were VERY good mechanics. I would highly recommend them in the Central Florida area.

Recover

Are you getting your table recovered because the cloth is worn, or just because you have it done every year? The usual home table never gets the abuse as a table in a commercial setting. The best way to save some money would be to get the table covered every other year. But if your table is getting that much use where the cloth is gone, then that is the cost of alot play at home. Still cheaper than what table time would cost at a pool room.
