This one did not use some big lingerin bug in the operating system. It spread via websites delivering free porn. If You surfed the site with a Mac, a popup appeared to inform you that you needed a new codec to view certain videos on this site. If you agreed, yut installed not a codec, but the virus. This approach works on any operating system, I assume
There are only few viruses for MacOS - however, that's not because it can't be done. It just pays out better to address Windows, because the number of targets is still about 20x as large.
I guess that with Apple's rising market share, it will be just 1-2 years before the use of a virus scanner for a Mac is strongly advised.
This is my professional estimate - I am the security administrator for the llocal government of Hannover, germany, an institution with appx. 6,000 computers.
