hi guys, i just had new k66 cushions and felt on rails put on installed the rails myself on my amf playmaster table,i snugged the rail bolts only and evrything seems to have lined up well but i dont noticed a huge diffrence as far as the bounce it plays well but wen u bank hard u hear a thump is that what i should expect ,or maybe the cushion height is off? or rail bolts not tight enough? or should i have gotten beetr rubber? k66 $50 artemis$250 inch and 3/8 is the cushion from playing surface and its and 8 ft table...

From my recent travels around the web, I seem to recall that thumping is an indication of a glueing problem. But, I don't remember where I saw it. And since the web is the source of much misinformation this should not be considered a definitive diagnosis. More like gossip and old wives tales:D

I have K66 cushions on my 8' Gandy table and the bounce is great using Simonis 860 cloth. My table speed picked up considerably over the original rubber rails that came on my table. I don't notice any thumping sound like you are describing so i'd make sure that the rubber is glued properly to the rails and that the rail bolts are tight (not too tight).

In addition to what others have said, if you had the new rails recovered with new cloth, you might have to let the cloth "loosen" a little. Brand new cloth on rails, especially if it's pulled a little too tight, will kill the action of the rails some.

My original Olhausen rubber was faster than the Artemis, I guess because it was old and hard and designed to go with old slower cloth, not the faster Simonis. I switched over to Simonis and the hardness of the rubber showed. When I got Artemis rubber installed, it seemed a little dead at first because I was used to the old springy stuff. Now that I am adjusted to it, it's great, because it's very consistent.

New cloth will bounce slower when hit straight on because the cueball will not reverse itself as it hits the rail but keep trying to spin forward, just like when you try to follow off a ball near the pocket and it dies instead. It will likely get faster as the cloth ages. If you can't see pull marks from the staples then the cloth is not tight enough. The cloth must be tight for it to bounce right. The thumping sound is usually loose rail bolts, but don't overtighten them.

Replacing the rubber is usually unnecessary as it takes forever to wear out in normal use, even in a poolroom. (like 50 to 100 years).
