Back around Thanksgiving, Bob Flynn of Denali cues showed a few of his butterfly creations. I decided I would get one to try out. I received my cue yesterday, and it is a real treat. First, I am a sucker for butterflies and saturn rings, etc. Then, you put the super reasonable prices that Bob puts on his cues, and you are set to go. I played with the cue last night, and the hit is very good...not overly stiff, plenty of action. Bob sent me one of his standard maple shafts as well as an oak shaft. I thought the oak shaft would be extremely stiff, but I was very surprised. The cue weighs 21 ounces witthe Oak shaft, which weighs in at 4.5 ounces. It weighs 20 ounces with the maple shaft. The balance point is around 18.5" with the oak shaft and 18" with the maple one.

Bob is here on AZB as Qmaker. If you want a unique playing cue and are somewhat strapped for funds, I highly recommend Denali cues. It is a ton of work for the money. This cue has 7 butterfly splices in the handle.

Could you make a close-up of that oak shaft? It sure is very interesting, to see all the new shaft materials out there (I play with a hornbeam shaft myself).
Could you add some more details of how it plays? Do you like it?
Thanks!

Jule,

The cue plays very well with either shaft. Nowhere near as stiff as I thought it would be with the oak shaft. I know that Brunswick and some other cuemakers made cues with oak shafts back in the 40s and 50s, so it is nothing new. As a snooker player growing up, I was used to the stiffness of an ash shaft. This cue is nothing like an ash cue, but it is still solid.
