I have worked in vending with pooltables and such equipment in some very bad bars, for around 18yrs and I have seen a small amount of pool balls/cue balls chip under
extreme abuse. But I have also seen cueballs thrown out of a vehicle at 65mph, hit a concrete wall and when inspected, only had a scuff in it. To think that someone can hit a cue ball with a tip only 7-8 ft away, and can dent or leave shards, using a manufactured tip material attached to a wooden dowel approx. 1/2" dia. either his name is Popeye or the Hulk and their using technology beyond our planet, or someone is full of s#$@, or someone is using very cheap, imported balls that would chip by just by dropping them on a wood floor. If it's that bad for the equipment, doesn't common sense say that the weakest part would break or damage first?? like the shaft? It's only wood, therefore the wood should break first, before a phenolic ball should have a dent. As for shards of glass, your tip would need to break apart for any 'shard' big enough to be noticed, to be left on the table.
The pros break at an average of around 20-25 mile per hour according to stats I read in a pool mag about 5 yrs ago, therefore this would be a problem way before these new style tips. I think we need Myth Busters to investigate these claims.
