Check out my new online video that shows how to adjust your aim for squirt, swerve, and throw when using sidespin. It also shows numerous interesting game-situation sidespin examples where the aiming techniques are applied. Back-hand english (BHE) and front-hand english (FHE) techniques are featured.

Here it is:

Enjoy,
Dave

PS: I look forward to your feedback and comments.

Instead of having to calculate 40% BHE and 60% FHE etc. with a low deflection cue, wouldn't it be easier/more effective to use a cue with a relatively short pivot point (high deflection) and just use 100% BHE for everything?

100% BHE with the bridge at the natural pivot length will work for short-fast shots, and will be close enough to pocket balls for many other shots (especially if the OB is close to the pocket and on tables with large pockets), but it won't work for other shots over a range of distances and speeds where swerve is a factor (especially on a tight table).

Try out the BHE/FHE Calibration Drill and you will see what the percentages need to be for all shot types. You don't need to "calculate" anything. You just need to know the values to use for each shot type.

Very informative...but not stuff one can easily pick up playing only a few hours per week. As you said in the video..takes a lifetime to become proficient. Let's see, I'm 74 now, so I figure in another 30 years...;)

... most of them would probably think it is "too technical" or "too detailed." Or many would think "I don't need that" or "That won't help me" or "I already know all that stuff already."

Thanks!

Regards,
Dave

I think you did a great job on these videos, as usual.

Most that think these vids are not necessary are the very one that need it the most.

Congratulations on job well done.

My "it would take a lifetime ... assuming you learn from your mistakes" statement was referring to developing an intuitive feel for all of the squirt, swerve, and throw effects.

Working through the BHE/FHE Calibration Drill only takes about 30 minutes, assuming you can do the back and front hand pivots reliably (after a little practice).

And after you learn the percentages in the table (or keep a copy of the table in your case), you can aim effectively for a wide range of sidespin shots immediately (assuming you know when and how to also adjust your aim for throw).

And if you practice how to make slight corrections for top/bottom spin and cloth conditions, you can be really accurate.

This certainly does not take a lifetime ... even for a 74 year old who doesn't yet have a solid intuition for all of the effects.

Give it a try,
Dave

Should be required viewing for every apa member.

I agree, but my experience in pool leagues has shown that most people aren't really interested or able to put in the time and effort it takes to improve. It seems like most of them are just out to have fun ... although, isn't it more fun if you win more often? And many of them don't like being told what to do, maybe because they have too much pride to learn something from somebody else?

Thanks again for your positive feedback.
