New high run makes me happy in my pants

So I'd been hitting 20's every so often, and my big 30 was like 2 years ago.
Several guys had been telling me I should be hitting 50's given how I play 8b or 9b, and finally I started running balls properly.

So I ran 3 racks and had a fine break ball, which sadly I was shooting from the kitchen. I nailed it, popped like 6 balls totally out of the rack, and got buried badly cuz I understroked it (not used to having to shoot from so far).
I was so completely in jail, with 2 balls frozen to the cb, that I didn't even have a kick without masse, so that was the end of it.

Too bad, 50 has always been my magic number that I've been dying to hit, and I was definitely there (and beyond) if I could see ANYTHING to shoot at.
I had to settle for 43 but I'm pretty happy. After 3 racks and getting good on the 4th, you start to feel like you can run forever.

Awesome news buddy, some congrdulational rep points on the way to you.

I still haven't managed to get past 104 unfinished, but I'm only really getting back into playing again, and I am going to start playing alot more straight pool now, to become much sharper again.

Anyone else here managed to break a previous high run record?

High Runs

My high run is 29 which I set some time ago. I believe it must have been 1943 just before joining the Navy ( U.S.) That was in the room later owned by Sailor. I think he was rack man there at the time. I have only just got serious about the game again in the last couple of years. I'm 81 now and I refuse to die until I break 30. The best I have done recently is 21 except that I did 25 in practice. I might be around a few years yet.

Thanks for the support. I'd love to break 100. I can't believe anyone would go unfinished after 104 balls! But anyway that's better than 94 unfinished, you hit the magic number most people dream about.

Dave, our room owner is a retired senior chief, had over 20 years in, I bet you two would get along great. Breaking through that 2nd rack always seemed to hold me back for years, once you do it and get through a third rack, it's a nice feeling because you know getting to and through the 2nd isn't just a one-time fluke :)

I wanted to keep shooting, but I was playing my friend for 50 GBP/$100 USD and after beating him he just swiped the balls to the end of the table to rack them up for some 9ball :) lol, hence the reason why the run is unfinished.

I am determined though to get back to that level again, I have recently got a new custom cue by Carolina Cues (Samboti Snap) and I absolutely love how it hits and it's got tha perfect type of soft, but solid and smooth hit, that for me is perfect for playing stright pool.

In fact, you're breaking your new high run has actually given me an incentive to break my high run, thank you buddy.

Keep up the good work guys, like the saying goes, where there's a will, there's a way to do anything you want to do.

Thats a nice run, Ive been wanting to play some, I just dont have a decent playing cue at the moment, Ive been trying to shoot with a house cue, whitch isnt all that bad, but its hard to find one that is straight. Recently I either sold or traded all my cues, for Christmas.....Not sure how that happened, but it did...

Rep to ya, Straight pool is a tough game, Im glad to see your pushing yourself to acheive a higher standard..

Way to go!!

An old timer told me years ago (before I got infected with the 9 Ball disease) that since the key to long runs is getting pos on a break shot that the following drill was useful.

1. throw out 6 balls in the general area of the rack and place a 7th somewhere around mid-table.

2. Take BIH on the 7th ball and plan a route to the Key/Key ball that gets you correctly on the Key Ball and then plan the route and run out to the break shot.

The threory being that you rapidly run out of route options with just 7 balls left and running that final route is the ticket to high runs.

I converted to mostly 9 Ball soon after that time and am just now getting back to the game I started out on and have always loved.

Any merit to that advice??

Thanks,
Jim

That is one of the drills I do. Grady said Dallas used to throw out three balls randomly and attempt to get a break shot. A bit harder. Your exercise is probably more practical and it teaches you to keep control of the cue ball, because especially towards the end, a small mistake in position gets you out of line to continue.

I had a similiar experience a couple of weeks ago, I had a bunch of 28/29 ball runs over the last few years. But nothing for teh last year or so. Then I was practicing and made 37 without really even noticing...very happy.
