I just played my first league night of 14.1. Im not a bad shot been playing for 12-15 yrs. But im the worst straight pool shooter ever. It seemed like every time I had a chance at a break out I was swinging for the fences and would miss the ball and break it out for my opponent to run out. But I do like a challenge and am gonna stick with it. Any advice along the way would be greatly appreciated

Let me be the first to welcome you to the 14.1 forum !

straight pool is a game of patients and knowledge, which you will gain alot of especially if you hang around this forum.

You need to be a student of the game and learn every nuance of cueball movement especially when going into break shots and clusters. Not always just slamming into balls and hoping for the best outcome.

There will be times depending on angle where you may have to go into break shots softly and just knock out a few balls to shoot !

I suggest you to toto accu-stats and look up the series by Jim Rempe on how to run a rack and how to run 100 balls. Also look for a book by Phil Capelle "play yor best straight pool "

good luck, and happy learning !

Steve

Welcome! I have several 14.1 videos at my youtube page & on Veoh - check them out - some are evaluations of videos that people have sent me from this forum - some are of me providing commentary on some 100+ runs by some of the world's greatest players - you will learn the most by watching the world's best - and you will also learn by watching others make common errors within their strategy. There are also several videos of Marop, Steve Lipsky and Danny Barouty out there. Get your hands on anything that has John Schmidt's name on it. Get a copy of Danny Harriman's 280 ball run dvd. Watch all of them and take notes.

Also, browse through this forum - it is a gold mine of information.
