New Info Regarding APA Rankings

People have been manipulating the system for a long time without knowing exactly how it works.
Correct sir... Showing the formula doesnt encourage sandbagging, lack of integrity and greed do...

When I was 19, I started playing APA, and I was a 3. I would shoot left-handed in league, just so I looked awkward, miss some easy shots while leaving my opponent half hooked, and then win when necessary and lose the rest. Then after league was over, I'd go play some $50 dollar sets right-handed with 6/7's straight up. I had no idea about some "magic formula", all I knew was if I looked like I was having problems with forming a correct bridge, and couldnt break for crap, nobodys gonna be suspicious and my team was gonna be golden... :embarrassed2:

After 2 sessions, the losing and BS made me quit pool altogether for 2 years. Started back up about 1 year ago and if I played more than 8 times a session i would probably be a 7(not a good 7 :( , but still a 7 )

Im not proud of the fact I was an idiot when I was younger :banghead:, but it happened and I was able to learn a little from it. Currently, I feel the APA is just about showing up, trying my best, and having fun with my friends and winning my match. When I want to play REAL pool I go to tournaments, or play ACS/BCA league occassionally.

Key point here is, I would venture to guess that 85% of the people playing APA, are there to make it to Vegas. About 50% percent of new players are brought in to be good "low numbers" for a team with Vegas aspirations... Whenever there is money(or plane tickets/hotel rooms) people get greedy, and they try to circumvent the rules... One formula "in the wrong hands" is not going to devalue the sanctity of a league where the whole purpose, for most LO's and players alike, is to GET PAID... :yeah:

I have however, removed the link, as the person it was intended to help has probably received the benefit of learning how to mathematically move up. I am not a proponent of "cheating the system", and would not like to further the cause of someone making the same mistakes I did.

I mean no offense, as many of my friends and I are affiliated with, and play APA regularly, its JMHO

Becoming a SL7

One of our local players has been a SL6 for a few years. Not the strongest, but very strategic (read as lots of safeties). Over the last couple sessions he attained a 100% win percentage over the last 30 matches played. He would always put himself put against SL4's and SL5's. They win our Local Team Championship. He beat me in the finals, we both played well, but he shot just a little better that day. The rolls favored him also.

Anyway, they go to Vegas for the National Team Championships and the guy is still playing pretty good and wins a couple of decisive matches. he goes up to a SL7.

Since then he can't hit a lick. The poor guy is the weakest SL7 I've ever seen, and now he's 'locked in' at that skill level. I talked to the LO and he said there's nothing he can do right now. So the guy either has to bring his game up or continue to lose... to no avail, as he is not capable of going back down.

So, beat up on 4's and 5's long enough and you'll get someone's attention. ;)

Lucky#-7

I started playing APA back in 1990 and we only had two 7's in the league. These 2 guys were the on the pro scale. They were unbeatable.A few 6's & lots of 5's ect.Today every team has a 7 on it just not the same skill as past years.NOW the secret is the more teams the more $$$$ the league operator makes,ALSO the more valuable his franchise is WORTH.I think they ruined it for the purpose of GREED.This is why I have not played in years ,just got tired of having to form new teams because of handcaps-------- APA# 079

poscdr09...I understand it's just your opinion, but the truth is exactly the opposite. Very likely 75-80% of the people playing in the APA don't give a rat's ass about going to Vegas. They play in the league for FUN. There are more than 30,000 teams playing weekly in the APA. Less than 10% are "trying" to get to Vegas (and only a few hundred of those actually make it). Your numbers on why new players are "brought in" are skewed too, to reflect only those teams who are trying to manipulate the handicap system, to try to win their way to Vegas...again only a very small percentage of overall APA members.

At least in my area you can request a minimum skill level. A while back I was a low SL 4. Most nights I played well but often had very high innings. Twice I dropped to a SL 3 and the following week played like a SL 5. I didn't like that my opponents felt I must be a sandbagger so I called the LO and requested that my minimum SL should be a 4. They said fine and since I requested it, if my game went into the s**hiter, I could remove the minimum any time I wanted. I improved and I am told I am now a high SL 4 so the minimum is moot but it made me feel better to request never being a 3 again.

If you want to be a SL 7 call and request it. Let your captain know before you do it as they may not share your high opinion of yourself :-)

Just play TAP! 25 limit, harder to get to a 7, easier to keep score!!!

easier to keep score? I hardly think so!!

Moving on the National Tresure aka the apa handicap system changes like the wind there is no method to the madnesss

Not only can u be over 50% and go down u can do that after a match u won and u can go up after a match u lose, TAP by a long shot has a better system
