Thanks for the welcome messages, you guys. It's nice to see some familiar names around here. Makes my entry into the group a bit easier. hehe!! Give you guys a little more background.
We always had a pool table in our basement at home when I was growing up. My friends and I would bang around on it, and my girlfriends too...but that's for another forum HA!!, anyway, over the years I got to be a pretty good shotmaker but didn't really know anything about playing position using english etc... When Beechmont Billiards opened up I went over there one afternoon with my 22 dollar cue that I picked up at Watson's and I thought I was the cat's meow. One of the owners was there and was watching me shoot....there weren't any other customers in the place at that time of day so he didn't really have much else to do. haha! Anyway, he came over to the table and he gave me some advice. He said "You make balls pretty good but you don't play position for the next ball" (it was Brian, Sherm) He grabbed his cue, a really nice Joss West, and started showing me some things. I guess I was about 19 or so. I basically lived at Beechmont after that.
When I was 23 I moved to Japan....with my Japanese wife....er.....ex wife. I continued to play, joined a pool and billiards club and just got better and better. In 1999 I was ranked #1 in the prefecture and was slated to go to the All Japan tournament in Kyoto. Well, the leader of the club changed and the new guy was this old man that doesn't like foreigners very much. He said I couldn't go to the All Japan tournament representing my prefecture because I'm not Japanese. You can imagine how pissed I was. *I* was the number one player in the prefecture so *I* was the one that was supposed to go. I literally put my cue down and didn't shoot pool for close to 5 years after that. The taste in my mouth was so bad I just couldn't stomach it.
My love of the game couldn't allow me to stay away from it. I heard about a year or so ago that that old bastard retired from the club. I'm not jumping back in that quick but I have been back to the tables pretty regularly over the last year or so. Trying to be as open minded as possible about my own game I feel that in some areas I didn't miss a beat but in others I could really use some practice. Only problem is that I just don't have the discipline at this stage of my life to make myself practice like I used to. I can handle my own on a table but I'm not up to playing tournaments with people in my level group. They'd chew me up. Haha!!
I'm also sick and tired of 9-ball. That's why I came back playing 14.1. With 9-ball I've accomplished just about everything that I've wanted to do. With 14.1 I can finish a game to a hundred in 6 or 7 innings one day and then the next day it takes 30 innings. The challenge of straight pool, for me, is what keeps me coming back.
Well, hope I didn't bore any of you out too much. I really just wanted to say thanks for the welcome.

Please keep us updated on Japan's news...my daughter wants to go live there or England next year. She has been taking Japanese for several years now. She went to Japanese school every Saturday and learned to speak and write, and calligraphy and origami too, btw.
You said it's safe there. How safe would it be for a pretty 20 year old that is only half Asian...and that half is Korean? (I hear they are pretty hard on Koreans.

I think she'd be alright here. There is some racism that exists against Koreans but I wouldn't worry about it being a problem. I think she'd reall enjoy herself over here. Careful though, I originally came over here with the intention of only staying a year and 16 years have passed since then.
