New member to board, looking for an entry level cue $150 and under

I believe the best bang for the buck would be a Canadian Dufferin. You could stay well within your budget and the cue will play pretty well, especially if you put your preferred tip on it.

Good Rolls,
Rasta

I received my 99.00 Dominiak today and took it for a test drive....lets just say I played for about 3 hours and didn't put any of my other cues together. The cue had a nice crisp hit and great feel....The only issue I had was the wrap, it was about 2 inches short towards the forearm IMO, but the 4 oz shaft outweighed the wrap.......order one I look forward to your opinion

I'm glad you like the new cue! There are so many great custom cuemakers out there today, that it totally amazes me why anyone would play with a mass-produced production cue (Viking, Cuetec, Meucci, Budweiser cue, Joss, Players, Predator, Miller Lite cue, Fury, Mcdermott, Lucasi, Bud Light Cue, Falcon, Etc., Etc), when they can get a high quality custom cue made in the good ole' USA for the same price.

At the risk of sounding ignorant...arent McDermott's made in the US? :D

McDermott makes a descent cue for the buck, but a cored forearm 4 oz shaft, and linen wrap I would have to say Mr. Dominiak's custom cue for 99.00 delivered is tough to beat...IMHO

Um, "mass produced production" is redundant ;-)

Probably because most production cues are available for immediate delivery. People can go to a website or a store and see hundreds of cues for sale that can be delivered right away. Also because some people like to have the eye-candy decoration for the low prices. I would put the $92 Fury DL cues up against many other custom cue brands in a blind test where both cues are rendered completely unidentifiable and the same tip is on both. The fact is that most production cues are put together well, have a good hit and balance, and are generally good cues.

I have said many times that it is hard to buy a bad cue these days. Some of the production cues hit as good as anything ever made. I took a Lucasi SP in on trade and it hits a ton. Our Sterling $60 SPs are freaking great. One cuemaker we all know used them for blanks for a quite a while. Our Fury SPs are $150 retail and have full splices, or double spices, radial pins, inlays and everything else you would expect in a great cue. I could strip FURY off of it and insert any number of maker's names and jack the price to $450 and a lot of people would happily pay it.

Lastly, who says the Dominak cue is not production? I am pretty confident that Bill is not sitting down with each customer and discussing weight, taper, balance point, wood selection, and so on with each of these cues. I bet he has the making of these cues down to a method that affords him the ability to go through the steps the same way each time and pump them out.

Some are, some aren't. You'll need to ask McDermott which are and which aren't. I did at the Baltimore show and have since forgotten exactly which lines are not made in the USA.

If you are looking for a McDermott PM me for special AZ pricing. You won't be disappointed and I have plenty instock to choose from. All come with a lifetime warranty.

New member to the board, lots of good info here so far. Beginner looking to improve my game. Also looking to buy a decent first cue for $150 or under, any advice or recommendations? Anyone looking to sell a nice straight used cue in this price range? Do not like fancy cues with inlays (could not afford anyway in my price range), prefer a sneaky pete style with linen wrap and black points or a plan natural wood butt 2 piece with linen wrap. Thanks.

Check the net, and EBay for Lucasi L-ER....I have a teammate that has one, and it's a VERY nice playing cue. His has a radial pin, but they come w/Uniloc too (either, depending on preference). There is a LTD version of this cue that has a leather wrap instead of linen too. They sell on EBay in the $120 range...w/freebies. It's definitely not fancy, but looks good, and plays MUCH better than most $100-$150 cues in my opinion.

Some people like the hit of their production cues. Schon and Joss come to mind as two brands that are pretty well liked by players.

For some people, low deflection is the most important thing in a cue. Predator appeal to these folks.

Some people don't want an expensive cue, because they expect their cue to take a little bit of a beating, either at the bar, in in the car. Players, Falcon, etc. appeal to these people.

Some people like a cue with a good warranty. Both McDermott and Viking guarantee their cues for life, including warping.

Some people like to have a widely recognized brand name. Can you say Meucci?

One advantage of production cues is the ability to go to a retailer and try out dozens of different cues, and buy the very cue they like best, all in a single day.

Different strokes for different folks.

I agree on the hit and feel.
William is very nice to work with and answers email promptly. I ordered my cue without a wrap (full curly) and with two shafts (both turned down some). It was under $140 including shipping:)

Greg

How long did it take you to get your cue? I am thinking of getting one of these myself.

Wow, great wood selection. That Dominiak Q is a beauty, with 2 shafts and just $140. Hard to believe. I have 3 Dominiak Qs and all are well made and hit a ton. I'm sure u will like yours as much as I do mine.

Yes...but these small cuemakers don't use middle men and the customer's $$$ is more directly invested in the cue (and not lining the pockets of dealers). According to my sources, the mark-up on most mass produced cues like Mcdermott is about 100%. A Mcdermott that retails for $200 actually costs the middle man (aka dealer) around $100.

Try a McDermott, or a McDermott, or maybe even a McDermott. Did I mention McDermott?

Seriously though, lifetime maintenance and warranty against warping, how could you go wrong with such a tried and trusted name?

Trevor

Ok...I'll probably catch hell for this, but I think that McDermotts are probably the worst cues on the market (or perhaps second behind Stealth) in terms of quality and playability.
