New Nine Ball Movie...Take 2 AZ style

We've all been wanting another good pool movie. Haven't we?
Nows you time to step up to the plate (or in this context, the table).

The movie "Nine Ball" has taken a beating from the "AZ critics" so far.

Most of us have cheap access to video recorders today. There is a lot of talent and knowledge here on AZ. I thought it might be a cool challenge for the AZ pool fanatics to make their own trailer.

I was thinking we could have a two part contest:

1. A video trailer -- no longer than 5 minutes
2. A script -- no longer than 500 words

I well aware of the amount of time, energy, and cost it will take to make even a short 5 minute trailer. So, if nobody accepts the challenge or 1000 people do, that is fine.

I think someone from here could tell the "inside" story of pool. It can and could be about anyone, real or made up.

So let's hold judgement on "Nine Ball" until the final cut has been made.

I think that would be a great idea. And you are right, I think they need to wait and see the movie before they bash it. I wrote, produced, and directed "Pool Hall Master" and it was a bear. It wasn't until the 4th release (January 2010) that the audio finally was corrected. This was my fault because without knowing anything about Indie Film Making, I just went out and bought cameras, started learning as I went along, etc. (that was my bad.) Another thing people can do is go to a college/university and see if students in the film/tv department would like to get involved in filming, editing, etc. You will find them eager to help (some even have their own good quality cameras) and most of the time, they will, just to have their names in the credits.

I also believe with what you said. There is alot of talent and knowledge from the AZ players. I am just now reading a great script by Fred Bentivegna. I am sure there are others out there with great stories.

Since the release of my movie I bought courses on writing, editing, blocking, camerawork, etc. I am also teaming up with a couple of people out here that have gone to school and learned filmmaking. My next movie "Sharky" which will start in March 2010 should be 100x better.

I spent less than $10,000 (ten thousand dollars) and about 150 hours of filming in the making of the feature length movie "Pool Hall Master". I found great players like Sylver Ochoa, Corey Deuel, Gabe Owen, Rafael Martinez, and other great local players that participated in this movie. You will see that some pool players are great actors.

If I can help anyone with any questions about programs that are available out there, just let me know.

Thanks for the reply Joe. I think that is a great idea to try to get students involved. Who knows, we might find a "diamond" (no pun intended :wink:) in the rough!

If anyone is going to accept this challenge (even on a small level), please post that you are. Otherwise, this thread will get lost very soon.

Post updates, progress, time frames, or anything else.

Post even if your not going to contribute. Post some ideas of what you would like to see.

...I wouldn't mind seeing some really bad AZers trying to act. That might make Jennifer feel a whole lot better! :)

While I have no screenwriting experience, I do, as a result of suffering through 4 college degrees, know how to write. Perhaps we could collaborate.
I have a general theme in mind, that I believe could have some appeal to a general audience, and decidedly for pool junkies like me.
Basically, it would be a cinderella story:
- decent young male local player with natural talent but not very disciplined
- his father contracts cancer, leading to the young male player having to quickly mature and become the breadwinner for his family.
- as a result he "hangs up" his cue
- father recovers and is able to return to work
- with the encouragement of his loving girlfriend and family, young man begin to play again.
- with the help of a former regional powerhouse, his game quickly develops
- starting out as an underdog, he soon becomes a regional powerhouse, himself
- through local sponsorship he enters the US Open and loses in the 2nd round. Then fights back from the left side to win against a favorite and former winner

What do you think? :O)

One of the best people I know, on AZB, to take this on might be 310shooter (Andy). I don't know if he has time or is interested, but he definitely has the skills.

Collaborative Effort

This is a very good thread. There is enough talent here to produce more than one good story. Also,the experiences that many have can combine to create a profitable product. I spent a year working in Hollywood as an actor,and currently do stage plays here locally. While I was in L.A. I took acting lessons from a lady called Lilyan Chauvin. She was an accomplished actress,but also a member of the Director's Guild of America,and a Founding Member of Women in Film. I learned so much about how the director takes the story and creates this vision. Amazing. Following her advice on how to understand how the Director thinks,I worked everyday. I was recalled numerous times to particular series,E.R.,Party of Five,The Drew Carey Show and others,because the A.D.'s and Directors liked the way I worked. I also read Creative Screenwriting Magazine regularly. I would be very excited to assist all of you in this creation process. PM me so we can make contact.This is exciting.

That's what I am talking about! Creativity is out there...everywhere! I think you are on to something. You might want to contact your local college/university film/tv department and get them to help, along with pool players and pool halls. I will contact a.k.a.Trigger and see if AZBilliards would care to hold a contest for the 5 minute trailer. Find some judges and give out a prize to maybe the top 2 or 3.

Eric, to what capacity would 310shooter (Andy) want to get involved. As an actor or help with the script/shooting of the mini-movie, trailer, etc..?

I throw in a 20 spot. We might have to put a deadline on this if it is going to be a real contest.

So I propose July 4th of this year. That should be plenty of time for people interested to get things done.

I am impressed with your background. I think that like pool, getting behind and in front of the camera becomes contagious and then it brings out your creativity. Especially if you are amongst friends and have a common goal. All I have to say is that I am with you in helping anyone out there however I can also.

We'll call it the Pool Kid, no relations to the Karate Kid.

Young man enters a bar to meet his girlfriend. They have a bar table, he puts his quarter down. He wins and stays on the table for the entire evening. One of his opponents comments how good he is, and invites him to join his APA league team. With this guy on board, the team makes it to Vegas. The team captain to ensure their chances at Vegas, tells him to dump. He doesn't and gets kicked off the team, and framed for cheating.

Team captain claims there is no hard feelings, its just business and gives him a Balabushka in lieu of Vegas prize money Needing money to get back to NY, he tries to pawn it at Rick Harrisons. Chumlee was about to give him $10K until the Old Man pulls out the Blue Book and they all discovers its really a Color of Money commerative Joss N7.
Possible tie-in with Pawn Stars episode here in the making.

Player is stunned, angry, and vows to get better. Signs up for pool school at Chow@sea billiards, teaches a system (we'll call it NY/NJ style), with a proud list of graduates who become be APA 6-7s in 2/3 years. He discover the APA captain bad mouth him to be a cheater, so the instructor makes an excuse that the class is full.

Dejected, practicing his break shot alone at night, he's befriend the janitor, an old retiree who gives him a few pointers. He criticize the janitor, what do you know? you only work here. Later in practice, the janitor's advice clicks.

Next night, he changes his perception of the janitor and apologize for his behavior. The janitor teaches him old style pool, and each night he is coached by a different friend of the janitor, such as the waitress. Waitress is played by Jeanette Lee. Ginky plays the janitor.

He finds out that the local APA league banned him because his team captain turned him in as a cheater. No team will accept him. The waitress remembers one of her friends in the LGBT league has an opening. The LGBT league plays mainly in soho, west village, and the meat market. They accept anyone, and no judgements is their motto. He joins and happily discovers he's the only guy on the team of bi-curious single women; played by top ranked members of the WPBA. None of the team mates care about his past stigma as a cheater, but he has to pretend to be gay in order to prevent being outed. The girls, thinking he's gay and not interested in them tries to set him up with other guys.

This bush league is sanctioned under the APA, and they land a spot in the vegas finals where he faces his old team.

500 words or less, right?

Thanks to Eric for tuning me in.. I've been quite busy and haven't checked the forums in a while..

I am always down to do anything that involves lights, cameras, and action (no pun intended). Contest or not, I think it is a great idea to do this. It brings out the artsy side of us pool players and it would be a nice to do something different once in a while. This would be good for our sport.

If anyone local wants to collaborate with me in terms of ideas, manpower, or anything let me know. I went to film school at California State univ. Northridge and have been shooting ever since. I own/operate HD camera package w/ a 35mm lens adapters and other accessories. If we need crew I have a large rolodex of people from writers, to grips/electricians, directors, editors, and cinematographers (like myself).

Anyone in the Los Angeles area interested in meeting up gimme a holler at andychen23@gmail.com

Hey, it's great having you on board. Hope we can make something happen.
I've been talking it up over here in San Antonio. We are just getting ready to shoot the movie "Sharky". A feature length movie about pool. I've told some down here they have access to my cameras, etc. if it is going to pertain to this contest. Good luck to everyone elsle out there. Let's keep it going.
