New pool table and need rug advice

We are moving into a home that has laminate wood floors and I am putting a 4x8 table in and I am not sure what to do about a rug under the table?

Do I need a huge rug so I don't keep kicking the edge of the rug or can I get away with using something like a 5x7 rug just under the feet? Or do I need a rug at all and if not what can I put under the legs so the table won't ruin the floor?

Rugs (carpet) muffle noise, protect balls (if they hit the floor) and are easy on the "dogs" (your feet) in a long session.

Wall to wall carpet is good for reducing noise (especially if you have a return), protecting your equipment (balls AND cues), and is more comfortable for longer sessions. The first time you or a guest drops a cue you will be glad you put it in.

Wall to wall doesn't move around, especially on stretch shots. You also might want to NOT carpet under the table, having the table sit directly on the floor. This way you will not have to move the table when you replace the carpeting. If you are concerned about the floor under the legs perhaps a tile or round of carpet under each foot will offer the protection you need.

Your rug problem

As a former pool player and current rug importer, I feel it necessary to add my thought, although the former suggestions covered most. It's true that it's better to have some cushioning under your feet but an oriental rug (like I sell)tends to shift under the table and straightening it means lifting the table. In most towns there are carpet stores that sell carpet remnants, that they can cut to your perfect size and bind the edges. It looks good and wont shift. If you like you can get a rubber pad to put under it. Bed Bath & Beyond sells them.
