New pool training app just launched

The drill rating you see after finishing a drill reflects the one you've just completed.

We considered showing the rating for the current drill, but decided it would be too distracting. If the rating is low, players might not give their best effort, and if it's high, they might subconsciously give themselves a 'pass' — both of which can get in the way of progress.

So, we've decided to hide the drill rating until after you've finished. This way, you can stay focused on doing your best without being influenced by the difficulty rating ahead of time.

I'd be curious to hear what you (and others) think about this approach. Let me know.

I like that approach better.

Ive enjoyed using last little bit and I think has helped my focus/ confidence levels on getting to table facing difficult openers lately in competition

I agree with this.

just to give the developer some more inspiration (as if he needs it, lol):

Found a similar feeling paper to my Turtle Rack and punched a bunch of donuts out of it. They work perfectly, are easy to move around the table for different drills, and they don't move when the ball is hit. Credit to my crafty mother for coming up the the materials/punches.
They would seem to be reusable too. Nice!

What's the material please and what's used to punch out the donuts?

Super impressed with the app. I went through the beginning tests and decided to upgrade to premium. It has me looking forward to training.
I have been using the Check Billiard app for a couple of years and the format of Cueist is much more polished. I am far more engaged and the rating system is very motivational. Also like how it seems to adapt to your skill level. It is exposing me to shots that I wouldn't normally attempt in my training.
Please add defensive drills. I don't get to play against other people very often so no opportunity to practice defense.
Another idea: I would like to see how many shots I practice each day.
Keep up the great work!
Billy

Great to hear you're enjoying the app and are excited about training.

We do plan to add defensive drills (along with other shots like banking, kicking, etc.). The app is still in its early stages, so it will take some time, but it’s definitely on the way.

Regarding your request to track how many shots you practice each day - this is already available! Just head to the 'Stats' section, where you’ll find a complete log of your training. It includes your rating changes over time, a training log showing which days you practiced and for how long, plus drill stats with shot distribution and results.

Thanks again for using the app and for your feedback - if you have any other ideas or questions, feel free to reach out!

So My initial feelings were the shot’s they were rating you on were crazy low percentage shots that you would rarely shoot in a match. I went back to it after a couple days and finished the beginning 3 different skills tests. Now I’m rather enjoying it . Occasionally a shot still comes up that your like I would never attempt that low percentage shot but it mixes in nicely with the rest of the shots and keeps you focused. so I’m changing my initial ratings to a thumbs up.

Now I feel we need a whats your rating thread on az 😂 so we can chart how bad or good we all are in comparison

At first, the app is figuring out your strengths and weaknesses, and sometimes it guesses wrong. It usually gets things right pretty quickly, but it looks like it took a little longer for you.
That said, as you’ve noticed, the more you play, the better it gets at dialing in your skill level.

Glad to hear you’ve changed your initial rating!

That's a good idea. I was thinking at least in the app you could see friends ratings or the people you follow ratings...

Sorry guys, missed the initial tag.

I'm not sure exactly what it is. Similar to the turtle rack, but definitely not plastic. Just thin transparent paper.

From the photo and description, I've concluded it's a material (not paper) called interfacing used in sewing to add stiffness to a fabric.
It is either identical or very similar to the material used for rack templates.

I made a few test samples using one of the thinner versions and a thicker version. The thinner one works better because it interferes less with a rolling ball. From this photo you can see that the brand name is Pellon and the thickness is style 910. I cut the circles with scissors and punched the center holes with a cheap paper punch. The size of the piece is limited by the punch because it has to be able to reach the center. Hint: The punch may work better if you punch something about the thickness of a 3x5 card at the same time.

You only need two to setup a shot and they work great. Very easy to setup and then reuse the setup for the remaining attempts.

Hey Denis,

I don’t know how this thread slipped by, but I downloaded your program this morning. What a treat! I ended up signing up for 3 months.

The shotmaking portion put me on my heels a little bit. I don’t often practice shooting thin cuts from the jaws. I also know that I avoid shooting shots where I am in between a bridge. Meaning, the cue ball placement is such that bridging off the rail feels a little too long, my closed bridge seems too short and view obstructed, and I often feel like I’m having to flex my wrist uncomfortably for an open bridge. Thanks for getting me out of my comfort zone there.

I also enjoyed the positional portion. This is how I usually practice; 25 shots with a landing area, make first three or shoot 5 and goal is 80% over 3 sessions to replace the shot. I also alternate left and right sides each session. I do seem to play an inordinate amount of shots to center table, so it was nice to see a little more variety in the routes. For example, connecting the 2nd diamonds on opposite long rails down the length of the table.

Must say I recognized a shot that I dogged the other day. I would love to say that I kicked its butt, but I dogged it again. Thanks for that, some lessons are harder to learn than others.

Couple few things:

I would like to see something like, “variations on a theme.” Same shot, but with different positional considerations. One thing I struggle with is recognizing when I am NOT, in fact, 80% to make a shot based on how I’m playing it. Where does my comfort zone lie? How does my effectiveness break down when shooting different types of shots and are these break downs consistently speed or spin related?

I’d like to see an option to repeat a shot or set of shots from the opposite side of the table.

Is there an option to make a second profile. I watch my son get into video games and listen to him talk with his buddies about stats and rating for the games. I think he could get into something like this that has a variable rating.

A toast to you, “Here’s to it, and from it, and to it again. And DAMN the man who didn’t do it when he got to it, may he never have the chance to do it again!”

Oh yeah, I second the motion for safety scenarios.

Maybe I lack discipline, but I almost never set up safety shots in practice even though I know I should. To make matters worse, I play on my own probably 95 percent of the time, so there are absolutely no consequences for selling out.

I am enjoying your app!

My rating is currently 2233.

One thing that I have noted is that some of the scenarios do not work so well on 7ft tables.

Wow, thanks for the kind words and for giving Cueist a shot! Really glad to hear it's pushing you a bit outside your comfort zone - those thin cuts from the jaws can be brutal, but they definitely show up in real games. And yeah, getting comfortable with all bridging situations is important. A lot of players instinctively avoid practicing things they don’t like - I know I’m guilty of that myself.

On your suggestions:
  • Variations on a theme – Love this idea. I’ve been thinking about incorporating something similar, but it’s not at the top of our to-do list, so it’ll probably take a while.
  • Repeating a shot from the opposite side – Not currently an option, but I see how that could be useful. I’ll add it to the list of things to explore.
  • Second profile – Right now, the only way to have multiple profiles under the same account is by switching table sizes, which acts like a separate profile with its own stats and ratings. This is mainly for players who use different tables (like a 7ft at home and a 9ft in the pool hall).
That said, you can have multiple accounts on the same device. Your son would just need to log out of your account and log in with his own. That would work too.
Really appreciate you taking the time to write this up - this kind of feedback helps shape where we take the app next.
