Project...Build an additional shaft for and existing McD butt without changing any original joint dimentions that would keep the original shaft/shafts from continouing to match up to Implex joint collar with McD 0.867 OD with existing finish. Tried undersizing new shaft to 0.830OD joint and building it up to 0.880 oversize with CA...faced off...mounted on butt zeroed in my 12x36 Logan...sanded down to about a thousand over...started polishing to mate to final size when CA finish chipped off at joint line. Cleaned off CA base finish to 0.825...mounted bare shaft on butt still zeroed in the lathe with tip end supported in original turning center hole on live center all turning true...covered exposed implex joint surface with electricians tape...built up shaft with CA lapping over tape...sanded down to tape...peeled off tape...sanded and polished down to Implex finish. Did the Hightower bump and twist to separate the joint and the finish chipped off the shaft again. Removed all CA from shaft and am resizing with CA to try again to sand it down to mate with the McD joint with out sanding on the implex. Feedback please...probably a very simple solution that is eluding me...like to long sniffing CA and accelerator (LOL)Ken Ken . qspot@tulsacoxmail please don't use PM's Thanks......

Hi Ken
1st, I would make a mandrel to size it to,
2nd, Why are you building it up from such a small size?
3rd, Your working way to hard.

Doesn't sound like a Marriage to me, it kinda sounds like a divorce!!!

I agree with Micheal, make a mandrel put a new collar on the shaft and cut it even with your home made mandrel then finish it to size.

If you're looking for .867" final OD after finish, IMO, your joint dia. should be no less than .860" right now. You could even do .862".
McD's finish is thick but there's no reason for you to lay-on that much finish. Sometimes, less is more.

When I first started reading your post, my first thought was : Why are you taking it off when you just have to put it back on again?
Keep the ring big and the finish thin.

Thanks for the feedback...rebuilt the joint to size using a mandrel for the third try...third try like Goldielocks is just right...job is out the door... next time I'll have the butt joint in hand before making the final passes on the shaft tapering lathe. Thanks again Ken Ken. Q-Spot Billiards-Tulsa,OK.
