New Shaft Question

Hey All,

Just got a nice new OB-1 shaft...annnnd I'm pretty much in love with it. Curious question though. The back end of the shaft, where the joint is, is larger in diameter than the top of my butt. Is this a common problem when buying a shaft or is it just because I was shooting with a Bob Frey custom cue?

Either way, i've already shot with it some, not extensively as of yet though. If I go to a pro shop will they be able to "fit it"? Make the back end of the shaft smaller to fit my butt. And is this necessary, or is it perfectly fine to shoot as is?

Thanks for you comments!

Yes it is common. It's actually rare to buy a shaft and have it match your cue perfectly. If you take it to a cuesmith they will be able to match it up to the butt of your cue.

Make sure you price the work before hand. You might end up with a lot of $$ in that shaft. It should be/play fine if it doesn't bother you. Check out the "ask the cuemaker" posts, plenty to read there on this subject.

After market shafts rarely fit custom Cues perfectly and it's not a problem playing with them if they're off slightly. My predator shaft is slightly smaller than the joint on my cue and it plays fine. You can have a cue maker/repair man modify it to match perfectly if it bothers you, but it's not something you have to do.

Many of the aftermarket shafts are available as "partials," i.e., without a joint collar and pin hole, and also a little oversized, ready to be custom fitted to your cue by a cuemaker.

I spoke with my guy. He told me he'd do it for 25 which seems like a a deal to me at least. :)

Really I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't be damaging to the shaft to play with it before having it matched since I have APA league tonight.

Seems from comments that it won't be. So I'll go ahead and shoot with it.

Thanks!

I had a shaft for my Pechauer turned down to match the joint diameter by a local cue maker for $20.00.
Then I brushed on some clear poly about 4 inches up from the end of the shaft with a foam brush and it looks good. Playing with it slightly over sized was fine. But I would constantly run my finger over it and it bothered me. Just a mental thing.
