New Shaft

So, I'm looking for shaft suggestions. I agree that going to a store and hitting them, and/or hitting my friends equipment to see how I like how it feels and such is the best way to go. On the other hand, I really have no place to demo any equipment seriously and my experience with different cues is limited.

I've played with a Meucci cue with a red dot shaft for ten years or so and before that just crappy house cues. I've played with my friends 314 Predators recently. I find myself more accurate on long shots using english with the Predator than I do with my red dot so I want to get a new shaft.

After reading about different shafts, on paper the Lambros Ultra sounds like one I'd really like to try but I can't find one of those around anywhere...

Thoughts?

Given your limited experiance with ld shafts it is hard to say that you will be 100% happy with any ld shaft.
I don't know if I am helping but I would suggest getting your hands on more ld shafts to hit with.
There really is no best shaft, much like the best tip.
It is all a matter of preference.

get yourself a WD700. it's ld and stiffer than your meucci shaft but not so stiff it'll throw you way off. or go 180 and get a standard stiff shaft or a mezz hybrid alpha. stiffer than bamdog in his lil sisters room in high school and still pretty LD

Just get a predator. people on here bend over backwards to avoid using them for ideological reasons only.

Thanks for the responses. I'm definitely resigned to the idea that the LD shaft may not be to my complete liking. I use mini-masse on shots to get around blocking balls pretty accurately and when I tried them with the Predator 314, the cue ball just tracked straight regardless of using the same type of hit I do with my current shaft.
On the other hand, long shots with english (which I encounter far more often than when I need to mini-massse) were much more accurate so I'm guessing once accustomed to it I will like it better.

I'm definitely leaning towards the Predator, but wanted to hear of some other accounts from people who may have tried other shafts, specifically the Lambros Ultra Shaft since I've read some really favorable things about it in particular. Since I've hit the 314, and am fairly sure I'll like it better than my current one after a week or two, it seems like the way to go.

Thanks for the thoughts and replies!

a predator z2 or ob2 is a wise investment...but again its all about preference. i've never been a fan of meucci red or black dot shafts so...if you're looking for something similar but not foreign i would look for a shaft with horrible feedback and tons of squirt:D

I've been kidding myself into liking the red dot for many years now but after hitting some long shots with a predator and having much better results hitting center pocket I've finally admitted that the red dot isn't very forgiving and doesn't result in much spin either basically giving it the worst properties a shaft could have...

i would look into a mcdemott I shaft, it is hard to beat their warranty and maintenance plan. not to mention a good shaft.

another i would like to recommend you to look into is the jacoby edge hybrid. cant tell you much about them, but i would like to get my hands on one.

Let me know if you would like to try a couple

I see you are in MA. There is a cheap tournement in Ayer every Tuesday night. ($7.00 cheap) I get there once a month or so just to hit a few balls. I have McDermott I2 shafts, as well as a version of Joe Callalucca's LD shaft. I really like Joe's to tell you the truth. They both have triangle tips on them. Let me know if you would like to hit them.

Good luck in your search. They all play different to everyone. Just make sure whichever you choose, give it a couple months of solid play before you go changing again. I have seen people get into changing and they go on for a couple of years and never get the feel of any of them.

Well You cant go wrong with Lambros LD shaft it is the BEST shaft on the market... You can call his shop and talk with him about it..

Thanks for the offer, I shoot in a league on Tuesday nights, but have a bye on July 31. It would be fun to play in a cheap tournament and also get to hit with some different cues. I'll definitely stick with whatever I end up with for quite a while... If I can like a red dot for ten years, I think any other shaft will keep me happy for a good length of time.
The 314 is probably going to get my money. I've hit with it, I like it better than what I'm using, so I figure it's a good way to go.
I'll get the lambros when I finally spring for one of his cues and get the whole package.

I really want to hit with this shaft somehow...

Or if someone had a Tiger ultra X try that. It's not quite as LD as Predator, I have both the Tiger is stiffer. However Predators lack of squirt gives me fits on long spin shots - it swerves to much. There's always a trade off hopefully you find one that fits your style of play.

I tried quite a few Predator models, all had a dead hit to them, stiff, no feedback.

Although I can't shoot with a LD shaft worth a crap to actually make a ball with any type of english, the best feeling one has been a Mike Webb shaft a friend of mine got. he plays just as well with it as he did with his 314-2, but it was a much better feeling hit with that shaft.

We actually both play in Ayer a lot (used to on the Wed night Masters league) and I'm there a lot with my son on the Sun Jr. league. That tournament is pretty good for the money and the everage skill level is pretty good also. As long as you don't mind really short races and the fact that I've yet to see it finish, someone in the top 2 or 3 always asks to split.

If you will be there this Tue for the Jr. League fundraser, my friend may be there with his stick, I'm sure he'll let you try it.

Unfortunately Tuesday night is my league night and since I'm the main coach for timeouts, I don't like skipping out on those nights...

If you decide on a Predator 314 shaft, you might as well buy a whole Predator sneaky pete. Might be able to find a dealer on AZBilliards for a good deal.;)

If you just want a shaft, I'd go with the Tiger Ultra-X.

Not the Pro-X.

i use a mezz wd700 and I prefer it to the predator shafts, the mezz has that stiff feeling like a regular shaft but its also LD..... I've sold my 314-2 and just use my wd700 now regularly.

I'm ignorant of those ideological reasons, would be curious to hear what they are. I personally don't like the hit and feel of hollow (even if only at the tip end) shafts, but clearly, Predator is onto something as far as their shafts' LD properties are concerned, and as an instructor, I can only encourage players to try and find out for themselves if they like them, as in theory at least, there's no denying that using an LD shaft can/would make life easier on modern equipment.

As to Lambros, I love his regular as well as his LD shafts (the way his cues play in general), but am not sure they're available for cues other than his own.

They are:

I've emailed Greg from Billiard Warehouse and the shafts are custom made to order and will take 2-4 weeks if I decide to get one...

That looks like a pretty old ad - Mike told me over a year ago already he no longer makes the 5-piece-pie shaft (it's now three only).
