new shafts purchase

i get most of my shafts from old housecues and most are a darker color. a customer requested some whiter shafts, so i bought 4 shafts ready to sand from a dealer [ maybe to be named later ]. these shafts were just over 13mm. i let then hang in my shop for about a week, sanded then and put on a sealer, then 2 days later all 4 were about 1/8 inch crooked.
my question, are ready to sand shafts ready to sand? at 13mm if i hang them for 6 months and they move how do i recut them?
where did i go wrong?

I don't buy any shafts at finished size. If a shaft is still moving close to finished size it gets thrown away. Two thoughts come to mind as to why your shafts might have moved. Both are related to humidity. First the humidity in you shop was different than where the shafts were stabilized, or when you sanded, you generated too much heat in the wood. I would guess heat was the culprit since it sounds like the shafts were still straight before the sanding.

The 2 times I have bought 'finish' size shafts, I got burned. The first time it was only a few and I hung them for about a year before using in my basement with a average humidity of about 50-60%. All of them warped, including a laminated one. The second time was really bad. The 'finish' size was about 14.5mm and had barbershop all the way down the shaft. I did get replacements for free, but the size was still 13.7-13.9mm but they were smooth at least. They did stay pretty straight though, just took a lot of sanding to get to size.

Shaft purchases

I have bought "finish size" shafts from Cuestockinc.com before. They all stayed straight after sanding and sealing. Dominiak has very good wood. The prices are reasonable too. You might check them out. Just my 2 cents.
