New Table....New Goal

Hello Everyone,

I'm more of a lurker here (hang out mostly in the Main Forum) but I do enjoy reading about 14.1. I really haven't played much 14.1, but I feel like I've studied the game a good bit. Anyway, like most players I've always had that 100 ball run in the back of my mind. I'm not sure at this point in my life if it is even a realistic goal but it's still in my long term plans.

Backing up a bit -- all of my 14.1 plans have been on the shelf because I really didn't like the table I had. It was slow and it had bad rails, and I just didn't have the patience to play 14.1 on it. Well, I now have a new table (new to me) and I really enjoy playing on it. It's weird, I got a lot of practice time out of the old table but I've found that if you don't really like the table you are playing on -- you will not enjoy playing 14.1 or one-pocket on it. So for me, it was just practice and rotation games. Maybe a little 8 ball. That was about it.

Anyway, my new table is a 9' AMF (Gold Crown knock off). I bought from another pool room that closed. I set it up myself and even tightened up the pockets. I didn't put new cloth on it but I plan on doing that in the next year. It still plays a bit slower than ideal but it's managable. The pockets are right at 4.5" which I know isn't ideal for 14.1 but I really haven't missed too many balls that I would have otherwise made on a looser table.

My personal high run is 52 balls and that's without playing a lot of 14.1. This was quite a few years back and I think I'm a much better player now. I've started tracking my runs over the course of the past week and a half or so and I've had several runs in the 30's with a high run of 39. I feel like I'm just beginning to see the patterns and I'm hoping to break 50 soon. My high goal for the next 12 months is 70. I think I can get there.

I gues we will see.

Nice Table, I'm REAL Jealous !!!

Set your goal run 1 ball higher than your highest run, because you know its a number that's within your reach !!!!

any chance you may record some of your play on video to share ?

Good Luck
-Steve

You're right Steve. I'm just going for 53 now. I've been at it for about 2 weeks now. I've been tracking all my runs, even my 0's -- no excuse for missing a break shot that you get to set up yourself, but I've been guilty of it a time or two.

Last night was pretty much my best night of 14.1 ever.

I had the following runs:
19, 14, 28, 34, 19, 20, 17, 35, 19, 19, 15, and 47.

I'm really beginning to like this game. When I played in the past I now realize I really didn't have the skill set needed to make any big runs. I was fooling myself back then into thinking I should be able to run some balls but my game really wasn't good enough. I know I'm still no world beater but I think I can beat the 52 and keep going up. I guess only time will tell.

One thing I like about this game is it gives you a more accurate idea of how difficult certain shots really are. I'll get down on a shot that I would have thought was a 90% make only to miss it and then realize I was probably only a 70% favorite to make the shot in the first place. It's really eye opening to see where you really stand as a shot maker.

Another thing, I do think 14.1 will help me dog proof my game. I still miss too many easy shots. Keeping track of my runs and hoping to put up bigger and bigger numbers is really helping me focus. Hopefully, that doesn't change.

I am going to post some videos in the near future so I can get some pointers. I just need to pick up a new memory card.

I still have my goal of getting to 100. For the longest time I felt like my high run wasn't as high as it should be for my skill level. In conversations with fellow pool players I would always find myself shaking my head in disbelief at the 14.1 high run numbers they would claim. So many players around me claim a high run number that was significantly higher than mine. I know many of these numbers are probably inflated a bit but certainly not all of them.

Well - I finally have a respectable number I can claim. Friday night I ran a 56 right before calling it a night. That felt good but still not good enough.

Saturday, I gave it another go. This time I did it with my daughter assisting me. She helped me out by jumping up and down on the trampoline at the foot end of the table. Plus, she was kind enough to score each and every ball on the dial counter for me. I just didn't have the heart to tell her she was being very distracting.

I also had to answer questions like "Dad, look at how loose this tooth is." and "Daddy, when did you lose your last baby tooth?" and "Daddy watch! I'm going to jump so high I'm going to hit my head on the ceiling....Dad...Dad....look." and "Wait Daddy. Did you score that one? Let me mark that one down. Which dial are we using Dad? Oh yeah it's this one over here. Dad this dial over here is really hard to turn. You should spray some of that stuff in there." Dad! Dad! Daddy!!! Dad....Dad....Daddy!!!

Well, we did this for a while until I got a bad skid and ended up too far below a ball I planned on cutting and breaking into the cluster. I ended up letting the bad skid make me lose my focus a bit and I missed a thin cut that I could have made. But I did run 72 and I finally have a decent run that I'm proud of, plus I surpassed my short term goal by a couple of balls. An 80 ball run isn't too far off but maybe I'll just shoot for a 73. I might even keep the little girl around for a while too. I might never run 100 but I'll at least be shark proof.

Very nice table, that is one to be proud of. Good Luck with your goals. With the kind of numbers that you have been putting up, you might hit that 100 when you least expect it.
Even if you do not hit it down the road, be proud of the numbers you do put up, many players wish that they could have those numbers.

Sounds like a wonderful little girl. Congrats on the 72 that is a good number, you got that 100 in you keep shooting.

Straight pool runs really bug me.

I had a money game challenge in 14.1 someone challenged me who I play a lot in 9 ball and thump, he insisted that there's more to cue sports than 9 ball and said we should play straight pool race to 125 for a couple hundred. I told him there's no way in hell I'm playing him in straight pool for money having never played before. Practiced the break shot a lot and just couldn't seem to get it right I left far to much. I almost wanted to call it off or insist we play some sort of rotation. This guy beats me on the lag and breaks poorly leaving my a shot and lets me open up the opening rack really wide. I ended up running 111 balls on a loose 8 ft table, my high run since has been 45 and I'm a better pool player now.

Is there a standard table for claiming a high run? I want to start recording my practice so I can better improve my game and track my progress as a player.

All the best,
Ryan

100 will come. Just don't think about it. Just get to the table and shoot some 14.1. I don't keep count ball by ball when practicing, there isn't any point. I'll have a pen and paper handy, mark down every time I go through a rack, and work out what the run was after by how many racks o went through and what's left on the table. There isn't as much pressure on you especially when coming upto a personal best.

All the best, buddy :)
