New toy and a wavy tap project

I got this mill a month or so ago (Grizzly G0704). I wanted to have a dedicated jig mounted to it for all points and re-cuts as well as a way to make all kinds of fixtures and jigs..lol.

Equipped with the Shars 550v vise...adding the power feed unit and a Dro when I get around to installing them.

I figured there may be a few on here with questions I possibly could answer (if they were contemplating a mill purchase like this one)

Ordered a couple wavy pins and made a tap out of one...saving money already..lol

Gratulations buddy, a mill is on my short list too.
With that tap, what diameter do you bore your shafts to?
8mm is the official spec.

I have the same mill and have been happy with it. I put some Cheap dro,s on it
And they work ok. I see that Grizzly offers this same mill with dro's now.

I have a jig setup that I made for cutting points that works great. If you are interested I can send you some pics.

I would suggest mounting your vice to a sub plate or use clamps to hold it in place instead of the bolt onto the outside slot . Otherwise, well done and have fun.
Sub plates are great for mouting things beyound the normal limits of the table. With some thought, they can also catch coolant etc as well.

I bought the cheaper DRO's myself (igaging setup..X,Y,Z)...figured I'd use the extra 600 bucks for tooling instead of the Grizzly factory dro.

I'd love to see some pics of the setup you made, Thanks......please email them to me...newsheriffintown1@gmail.com

Neil, Thanks for the advice.

I think his point was that only leaves .00125" per side to clean the hole straight and centered.

You think correctly sir, I also think there is no way that modified pin will cut clean threads. Taps don't just have flutes, they have flutes in specific locations.

I posted this thread for 2 reasons...

One... I was excited about my new addition.

Two...I thought possibly someone may have been contemplating a mill purchase and I may have been able to answer some questions they may have had.

Seems this has gotten derailed over the specifics of the tap. There's a lot of things I'd like to say....BUT..how about a picture instead.
